What's the best industry to work in?

I've finally decided to go and get myself one of those career thingys that everyone is talking about. No more faffing about for me! So what is the best job at the moment? I'm fairly well educated and have an interest in communications.
What is the up and coming industry (y'know, the one with all those high paying jobs that involve very little effort)?
    What job should I do?

Are you just out of school and looking to do a degree or what?

Call centres are a nice start if you're into communications. I've worked in both customer care and technical support (my current role) and its a good atmosphere. Despite what people say there is room for progression within call centres (e.g team leader, mentor, monitor roles etc)

I've done my third level education (generally subjects in the communications field) but I've been arsing about for a few years now doing nothing in particular. I don't mind doing a little more college work (an evening course or whatever) but I don't know what job i should be aiming for. There has to be a rewarding, reasonably well paid job out there!

It depends on what you mean by "best".

    1. Remuneration?
    2. Promotional prospects?
    3. Job satisfaction?
    4. Safety in Workplace?
    5. Future Prospects?
    6. Job security
    7. Work Colleagues?

Everyone is different. What some regard as a great industry, others may consider to be crap. I'd cut my throat before I'd work in a call centre or anything involving sales :).

Take on a job where you can show initiative. Working in a call center is tricky as you are there doing the same thing the whole day, the whole point of the call center is that you dont have free time while in there.

Granted you arent meant to have that anywhere else, but I found working in a call center makes you want to get the hell out of there once your shift finishs up.

Try and get into a company you "believe in". Money will always sway your opinion but if you can overlook that then it becomes that bit easier to decide.

A better job if you want a nice cushy job with very little room for change.

I wouldn't call it a cushy job what with the brats you have to deal with these days.

whichever one you would like to work in?

    Failing that

which ever one will employ you?

Customer care in a call centre is hell but if you haven't been working it is something for a cv.

Cushy in that its difficult to get fired from, guarnteed good pension and currently doesnt look like they plan on changing the way teaching is done therefore no need to demonstrate you can adapt to new situations etc.

come from a 3 generation jobby of teachers, but considering we've all probably gone to school you can make your own opinion up about it :)

I reckon unless the job really motivates you then stay away, no huge diversity in the roles you can do and I think after 5 year's it wont offer many new chalenges.

sure is cushy all right. Who else gets all those summer holidays and other days off ? Plus job security. Plus plenty of other civil service type perks ...eg almost always free car parking...pension.....paid sick leave etc etc. Plus plenty of teachers and third level lecturers I know have nice little sideline businesses / cash jobs / nixers they do in their free time.

Well you could try the civil service cause there are a lot of dept's that do sweet feck all.

Ok, so assuming the major factor is having a job that motivates you... then let's face it the civil service is out (the bureaucracy is very demotivating), teaching is out too (you’d probably already be trying to become a teacher if you had any interest in it outside the cushyness of the job) and don’t get me started on call center jobs.
An inspiring job with a future…not likely.

Become a soldier in a random 3rd world country, get the kill people.
Become a volunteer in a random 3rd world country, get the help people.
Become a worker in a random 3rd world country, get to work every hour of your life for £30 a month.
Become a worker in a random 1st world country, get to work 30 hours a week, a number of holidays, and get 3 weeks holidays a year.

You didn't say what you enjoyed? Some people actually like football, and would love to play football for some club. Yeah, like wtf?

Don't forget having to spend lots of your free time correcting homework. And also the way that there is surprisingly little pernament jobs going, and that subsistute teachers have to sign up for the dole over summer, as they don't get paid over summer... Sure, once you get in, its great, but untill then, unless you like it, you may not like it, if you get me.

Replace that with computing. Big field, with many different area's. Communication could be radio, TV, developing radio-communications (fot the army, for example), communication security, and I suppose you may be able to throw phones in there as well.

Heres a suggestion, try environmental health. It requires 4 years of college and then going to the UK for a job (theres feck all in ireland due to the handiness of it) and its a goverment job so all the perks and a nice pay (circa 40k) for a grad.

My brother does it and loves it. Wish i had of done the same.
