isn't this really just a web server for your local machine?

looks like it alright, unless it automatically converts video too, it's not much use to me.

    Was thinking the same.

Something that plays avi, divx, quicktime movies over the network would be great, but this is just the same as setting up an Apache server on your local machine. All the movies still have to be converted to Flash Video before you can view them, and then you are just viewing them as a webpage.

does anyone know if this is/could be possible with the Wii at any stage in the future? this would be a major plus for me as I currently have to burn all my divx/xvid movies to dvd before watching on me TV

Yep, but it has all the streaming stuff setup too,

I can't get the music streaming working on Linux though.

Does anyone know what version of the JDK you need for it, I think the version I have is too old.

well to answer my own question, according to the Wii Linux project (www.wiili.org), they are intending WiiLi to do just this
What features are you planning for WiiLi?

    * Surf the Internet (using the control as a mouse pointer)
    * Wii Media Extender, Stream moves, music, etc, from a PC to a TV using WiiLi and the Nintendo Wii in the middle. Think Apple iTV for free.
    * Write a document with a regular USB keyboard and print it with any USB printer.
    * Email and chat with your friends.
    * Use an external USB storage device to backup and play your movies, games, mp3's, etc...
    * Play old classic games using the MAME arcade emulator.
    * Develop your own programs and games.
    * Control WiiLi from your PC using the WiFi connection.
    * Use Wiilli and the Wii as a Network Attached Storage (NAS) by connecting it to an external USB HD.
    * Anything you could possibly do with a regular computer.

    See: http://www.wiili.org/index.php/FAQ

w00t best of luck to the WiiLinux project !

Here is an open source project that does something similar:

    http://wiicr.org/wiki/index.php/WiiCR

And here is a way of getting your mythTV to auto transcode to FLV <flash videos>

    http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Stream_mythtv_recordings_from_mythweb_using_flash_video#Automatically_transcode_recordings_to_flash_video_and_link_from_Mythweb

Hopfully we can hack the opera browser to make that big icon bar autohide and to use the black bar on top too..
