I would like to take a trip to Japan later this year, probably for two weeks but perhaps for three weeks.
I'd like to spend four-five days in Tokyo and then spend some time relaxing somewhere with a beach. From what I've read in tour guides and online, Okinawa (chain of islands) is probably the best place to head for this.

Problem is, I'm finding it difficult to find information about the island. In particular, finding hotels there which don't cost an absolute fortune. While I don't want to stay in a hostel, some of the hotels I found cost aprox €1000 a night which is unfortunately, way, way out of my budget!
I'd also like to know which islands are best to visit.

    Has anyone been here before?

Failing that, if anyone knows of anywhere which fits the relaxing beach criteria in Japan, please let me know.

If anyone has experience travelling in Japan, your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Was in Japan for 2 weeks a number of years ago and even though I know nothing about the islands or beaches this more general info may be of some help

    1. Get a Japan rail pass; this will get you all over Japan on the railways much cheaper than buying individual tickets. Also works on the Japan Rail network around Tokyo. See the Japan Rail website for details http://www.japanrail.com/
    2. In Tokyo don’t get fleeced for food and drink in Reppongi, (the main international tourist area), go to the Japanese areas link Shinjuku and things are more reasonable there.
    3. In cities if you are not too pushed about the size of your hotel room then look around for business hotels. The rooms are small but of consistently good standard and reasonably priced, they can be mainly found near railway stations.
    4. Go to the fish market in Tokyo
    5. Buy the Lonely Planet, it always contains good information
