thinking of applying for this course for next september just wondering is anyone doing it.

i dropped out of a computer science degree two years ago to do sound engineering and music production so this course seems like a good way to get a degree and have the best of both worlds.

how many points was it last year as i cant find dat info on cao.ie?

wat are the core subjects like as the names of the modules arent extremeley descriptive?

obviously im big into my music and dj and produce are the college studios open to people not doing the music tech course and what is the dj soc like (if it exists)

im thinking about living on campus but iv seen things about the net access being restricted etc, i dont care about bebo or porn but are there any other things restricted like torrents or online gaming?

ill prob add questions as i think of them all help greatly appreciated

    Hi,

I couldn't find a Digital Media Engineering course listed in the online prospectus. Did you mean Digital Media Design? The page for each course normally lists the points required in the previous year but the one for this course says it started in Sept. 2006 and it doesn't list any points requirement.

I'm doing Computer Systems so the modules are pretty different, although there is one or two common to both courses. Imperative Programming is an intro to programming they use Java. We also did Information Systems in Context which is about information systems in society. Finally Human Computer Interaction which we did this semester.....was probably ok but my opinion was a little coloured by having a 2 hour lecture in it every Tuesday (you try sitting for 2 hours without a cigarette listening to stories about the ethics of electrocuting someone).

I know there is both a music and DJ soc beyond that I'm afraid I know nothing of them.

The net access in campus accomodation is pretty decent. I'm not sure if Bebo is still accessible (there was a vote to ban it in the ITD managed computer clusters). Torrents and other file sharing is restricted most colleges will do this as it is against HEAnets AUP (acceptable usage policy) to allow such activity on their network and since the college get their net access from HEAnet the college is required to uphold the AUP.

Anyway hope all of that is some help.

    Cheers
    Rory

thanks man ye thats the course i was talking about its called digital media engineering in dcu so i got that confused.

my other cao choices are computer science and such so im seeing this course as a comfortable center between my urge to program and work with computers and my urge to work with audio in some way.

i expected torrents to be restricted i can only hope ill be able to play my beloved mmorpg (if you dont know what that means.....trust me your life is all the better for it)

any thoughts on wheather im better of with on campus(about 108euro a week) and off campus(i guess i could find a house for 85 a week)

I'm a nerd of course I know what an mmorpg is :). I'm not sure about online gaming it might work. I'll see if anyone I know in on campus villages is able to play them.

Campus accommodation tends to be more expensive and the only one that beats all of them for distance to the college is Dromroe. Plassey, Kilmurry etc tend to be a slight bit longer of a walk. I've been living off campus since 1st year and I've been paying 60/65 a week with stuff like Sky/Broadband/Heating being a little extra. I think off campus is probably a little better than on campus then again it's all down to personal opinion.

    Cheers

i'm livin on campus at the mo (plassey) and its cool but no limewire/online gaming/torrents/etc (unless you happen to know ways around it........which i don't :o ). movin off campus hopefully in the next few weeks, better options and all that. but on campus is a great way to start off in first yr, make new mates et al.
