Bike won't start!!

They say that Jan 2nd is the most depressing day of the year - I definately know what they are talking about!

After my break I went out this morning to my 50cc scooter - MBK Ovetto. Not a sausage out of it. No life at all. The indicators and the horn worked but the lights and the electric screen were not. Tried kick starting and there was nothing at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there anything that I can do or should I just go and bring it to a garage?

    Thanks for any advice.

    James

I went out this morning too and the beast fired up at the second time of asking.

Haven't moved it since the friday before christmas.

I would suggest to keep trying the kick starter and or bump starting it if it is being tempramental.

The battery is probably drained a bit too much to run the starter motor.

Thanks - but I was trying the kick starter for ages this morning. I can never depend on the electric starter. Could I jump it from a car battery - or is that was too much power and I would blow everything?

I've jumped bikes from car batterys without problems. The battery is probably just dead and the engine may have flooded too. It can also be worthwhile checking that the plug isn't fouled up. This in conjunction with a weak battery/kickstarter can stop bikes from running. It's happened to me twice.

I had to charge mine for about 10-15 minutes this morning before she eventually coughed and spluttered to life.

Instead of using a car to 'jump start' it, I'd recommend disconnecting your scooter battery's + and - leads from the bike before attaching the jump leads. That was you can't do any damage to the electrics or 'computer' components (if it has any). Then just leave them attached for about 10 minutes. That should give it enough charge to start (used to work for me regularly with an old bike!)

I've jumped started by bandit 600 a few times from a car. Unfortunately damaged the alarm one time. It still works, but left the indicators on permanently, rather than just blinking when going on/off. Had to get it disconnected in the end.

Thanks for the advice. I disconnected the battery and then recharged it for 10 minutes off the car. It started then.

However, the dial, lights and horn don't work when the ignition is turned on (but engine off) and then when the bike is started the horn doesn't work and the indicator lights just turn on instead of flash. The dial is also permantently reset.

Anyone know what the problem is? If I get a new battery will it work then do you think?

    Thanks in advance.

Have you driven the bike much after charging the battery to get it started?

It sounds like there is not enough power in the battery so either it is not accepting charge (fcuked), not getting charge (check the reg/rec), or just hasn't built up enough charge yet (drive it for a while).

If you have to jump it off a car/van etc don't start the car engine , better for the bike electrics.

Thanks for the advice. I left the battery charging off a car battery for about 10 min. Got the bike started but then came out to the bike after work yesterday and no a kick out of it!!!

Think I may just go any buy a new battery and hope that it is the problem. Thanks again.
