J1 - San Fran Summer '07

    Hey!

Me and friends heading to San Francisco on J1 this summer. We're basically planning on having a good time but do not know much about San Fran! Looking for pointers as to where the best locations are for young people to live? Mainly looking for somewhere with plenty of nightspots, clubs, bars, etc. and good public transport connections. Not familiar with the areas so any info on them would be great too!

Will also be looking for work, nothing to demanding -maybe bar work but with sociable hours so we can make the most of our time there. When we come back we will be finished college and out in the real world so this is our last chance at having a great carefree time and we want to make the most of it!

Any and all advice much appreciated!

    Thanks!

I was living in Berkeley (across the bay from San Fran, short journey on the BART). Very active with college students (even over the summer). Telegraph is the name of the busy street just outside UC Berkeley. There's a BART station there too. I was 20 when I went there in 05 so I don't know much of the bars and clubs. There's one called Blakes I think on Telegraph.

No matter where you live in San Fran, the BART is the best way to get around.

I was working in a hotel in San Fran. Lots of people recommend going to Pier 39 and Fishermans Wharf for jobs, but all of us (13) applied for jobs around there in about 8 or 9 different places (mostly restaurants), and none of us heard back from any of those 100 or so applications.

I'm sure more people will have more info and advice anyway, good luck.

we toyed with the idea of going to san fran but ended up choosing san diego to suit other's arrangements with friends in other colleges. probably going to ditch them and head for san fran in the first couple of weeks anyway. berkeley seems to be the place to go for accommodation, dead handy but you'll have to go into sf for work during the summer. i had a similar thread to this under UCD, if you want to nip over to that thread you'll get all the advice i was given!

I spent a couple of summers there in 1999 and 2000. Jesus, has it been that long? I guess so. I lived in a hostel downtown which was pretty handy for bars and clubs and buses and trains and whatnot. There are several hostels and residential hotels in the downtown area which were pretty good, though a little grubby.

Some people I knew got an apartment in Sunset which was cheap enough but miles out of the way. Bunch of people in Berkeley all right but it's far enough from the city, and the city is where it's at. The Haight would be a pretty slick place to live but it's super crazy prices up that hill.

In terms of jobs, I polished up my CV with some blatant lies and sent it to a few downtown employment agencies, one of which got me a sweet gig doing admin at a bank making pretty good money. So give the agencies a go.
