Coverage of ML games

I'm really disappointed with the coverage of the Magners League by Setanta - they buy the rights then actually only show one home Irish province match each week-end. Why bother buying up the rights if you're not interested in showning the matches? Setanta will wait another while before they get my money.

Newstalk have started live radio coverage of the games but I have to say it's close to being appaling - I know it's better than what RTE is providing or nothing at all but that's the best you could you say for it. I listened to Connacht V Munster yesterday and the 2 commentators were dreadful, I'm not sure if the Newstalk guy even understood the game.

Is this what we have to look forward to for the Rugby World Cup with setanta?

I can't listen to rugby on the radio like I can for hurling and Soccer, it just doesn't suit it.

Still it's a shame that an Irish channel won't show two Irish teams, but two welsh instead.

i suppose you could always have travelled up to the showgrounds. it's not that far from limerick

Setanta coverage sucks but we are seeing a hell of alot more rugby on tv now then we used too.

RTE could have bought the rights for the magners league for next to nothing but as per usual didn't bother

Didn't realise it was a sell out. Must be connacht's first of the season. Never been to the Showgrounds but it certainly looks like a pretty ****ty venue

Aye, it's a dive. Because it's mainly used as a dog track it's maintained for that main purpose, which is a pity.

I was in the showgrounds but would still like to have recorded the game - if you take your argument then why have coverage at all - maybe only those that can actually get a ticket should see the games.

I don't think we're getting more Irish Provinces now than when TG4 were showing the CL.

I'm not defending RTE, I'm making the point that Setanta coverage is poor - the amount of games that they show, the qualitity of the camera work, replays of incidents/scores and the commentry are brutal.

How could they show more than 1 home Irish game when there are 4 nations to cater for with home game coverage.

I find the coverage poor but they do cover plenty of matches. Theya re showing 3 Irish involved games this w/e.

Don't forget they are the broadcaster of Scottish games in the Magners League, they can piggy back on BBC Wales/S4C for the Welsh games.

But I do agree with comments on the quality of the production. When Sky first appeared on the scene, production values rocketed up. Setanta show that they want to buy into sports, but don't necessarily care how it appears. Their astons and graphics are a relic of bygone days. If its like this when they start broadcasting the Premiership into England, the ML might be back on TG4 sooner than you think!

No, as Setanta won't be host broadcaster for any of the games; they will have a feed from ITV and France 2/3 (who I think are the host broadcasters in France) Commentary probably won't change, though.

EDIT: It's TF1, and not the normal broadcaster of French Rugby, France 2/3

If the 4 Irish provinces were playing home matches against either Welsh or Scottish teams how many matches would Setanta show? Answer - Only one, this to me as a potential Setanta customer is not enough.

I can pick up S4C and BBC2 Wales for nothing on my FTA Satellite dish, where I can get most of the ML matches played in Wales.

daveirl - you're missing my point, of the 3 matches you list only one of them is a home match and my point is that if one of the other provinces was at home then they'd be no coverage of that game.

Maybe if we had some cash we could keep some players and have a decent ground, besides selling them to other provinces!you know who i speak of!
.We all know that the sportsground is crap a hewer to get to very little parking and can only hold 4500 and thats at a big squeeze.
Besides feeding from the scraps of the IRFU,unlike the rest of the provinces!
its no secret that we will be the whipping boys for a while to come, but we have the belief that we can attain heineken cup rugby in the not to distant future.
at the end of the day its very easy supporting a winning team!
I want all of the four provinces to do well, and i hope munster can do well in the Cup again this year no disrepect to Leinster or Ulster but I think after seeing them last week against our boys from the west they have the where-with-all to step through the geasr when needed!
    Connacht Abu!!!

I'm surprised at that, Newstalk are usually spot on. I wouldn't listen to any other station after 5pm (ok, maybe 5 Live for the tragic comedy of the Ashes).

I think it was Oisinn Langan and another former player who were doing the Munster Connacht game, so probably not that experienced. I like that guy from Carlow who does the commentary, Brendan Hennessy I think his name is (Although I might just have made that up because I forget).

I'd normally listen to Newstalk for ML coverage as they are, as Trojan says, usually spot on.
