i set up a password for my thinkpad's BIOS...so nobody would easily open it even it is got stolen...;) (aka,u need to input tat password to get into the Xp screen, without the password,no entry)

    the problem is...

when u set up for this password thing...

they need u to set up a 'normal' password(which login by tat password will allow u to apply to most of the changes of the laptop) and the admin password(which is needed to change the BIOS setting or some internal settings)...

:o:o i cant believe that the password i was always using is tat 'normal user' password!!!!:(

just realize tat i even need to login as admin to do a disk scan!!!

but sadly i cant remember the admin password.......
even i can remember tat long passphase for the IBM client security....

    any help will be appreciated...:o

p/s:anyone knows where is the IBM store in dublin though....

Just pop out the cmos battery, its under one of the panels on the underside, it may reset your bios settings including password

I don't think this will work on a Thinkpad. It's certainly worth a try, but IBM tend to be very security concious.

AFAIR, you have to take it to an IBM center to have the password reset.

Can you not just take out the drive and mount it on another machine as a slave?

No, most IBM's have a password on the drive itself.

The thinking being (no pun intended), if your laptop is stolen, at least they won't get your data.

Does the HD controller encrypt the data on the fly or something. I'd like a laptop like that myself.

I don't think so, I think it's some kind of firmware on the drive itself.
