Was in tramore today with my friend who knows nothing about horses and is a huge gambler 2 euro e/w usually on two horses in each race:rolleyes:
His usual way is to pick from the racecard the first two mentioned or pick the third or fourth horse mentioned he would never read the paper or check the websites.
Meanwhile i read newspapers check racing post online etc.
Two horses i backed were beaten just approaching the line ( this happened 4 times today in tramore),one horse pulled up lame in another race, and in another one the jockey russell fell off,80 euro gone no winners.
Meanwhile in six races (left before the last) he had 4 winners and two places with his two euro each way bets on two horses in each race, he had a profit off about 70 euro!!!!!!!

Is horse racing betting 90% luck, 9% good information, 1% skill!!!!!!!

Its like the non dart player beating the dart player every time, maybe i need a new System.
Would be interested in your views:rolleyes:

same happened to me and my dad- we went to Folkestone Racecourse and studied the form and we both follow horse racing quite closely, on this specific day we invited my dad's mum and dad to come along. In all the races i had 0 winners my dad had 1 and my grandad had 3 winners, 3 places (one of which was 66-1)

Was a hard days racing at Tramore today decies with all of the Favs bar one getting turned over,so any serious punter who made money at Tramore today did well.Sometimes I find that the more I study form the more I confuse myself. As for your mate,I would say beginners luck alright but fair play to him at least he will be able to buy the gargle for you tonight.;)

Horse Racing is a very difficult sport to make money from (not as difficult as Golf mind you) but when you take a whole meeting together, it's almost impossible. Look at it this way, the universally agreed way of making a profit from racing is to be selective with your bets. When you go racing you will probably have fun bets in all 6 or 7 races, the luck factor will come into play here because there will be tricky handicaps etc that you may not have bet in if you were being selective. I had only one bet at Tramore today but if I was on course I probably would have approached it like I would a night at the dogs.

My girlfriend is ridiculously lucky with small bets/scratch cards etc... I mean unbelievable like....

I'm not a serious punter by any means but I grew up around horses and that and have a passing interest in it so I know the basics about betting, form etc...

This is what my girlfriends does: She picks a horse that "doesn't have crap odds but isn't the longest odds either..." and backs it each way... and that's it!

Last week in Limerick, I picked the first two horses we backed, one was second and the other nowhere... She picked the third and we backed it a fiver EW (Something Cowboy - Merry Cowboy maybe) and it won us €120... I don;t even try and figure it out - sometimes ye'd think it makes a mockery of those who study form, rely on inside info etc... it's gas...

Earlier this year, there was about 30 of us at Naas... Two of my aunties (clueless in the extreme about racing) did the placepot at the start of the day for a euro or €2 or something (pick 6/7 horses from the day's racing)... They had very little time to do it because the first included race was about to start so their picks were made in literally about 90 seconds... They won somewhere in the region of €750...

Somebody somewhere is laughin at the rest of us when something like thsat happens lads...

I'm useless when it comes to studying form and that, it's like looking into a dark hole:D I normally follow the market movers.

Personally I think its all a con. Most racing use the punters have no chance against such a corrupt sport.

BEST TIP - Close the eyes and put a pin to the race card. .

I know the feeling lads. I'm a huge racing fan and spend huge amounts of time reading about the sport (not just form but all aspects). I've kept a record for the alst 5 yrs and have never ahd a losing yr, never won a major amount either but at least i'm keeping my head above water.

However when people come racing with me and back horses because they like the colours/name or because they've heard of the jockey and win it really annoys me!!!!

Haha, big time. I was at the Limerick races recently and had 4 winners on the day (3 on course and 1 at Leopardstown). One of the girls that came with us did a 2.50 e/w bet on a 4/5 shot and 20 win on a 16/1 shot... who won.

I wasn't annoyed because I was up for the day but this kinda lark annoyed me - and she only picked it cause the jockey had the same surname as her!

Worse thing you can do is win at the beginning. Beginners luck is a curse, trust me! at 15/16 was hooked on the feckers after pulling out a 25p yankee...have calmed down since, very rarely bet now but still have an interest.

One of my first ever bets was a 50p patent at the age of 17. Won about 60 quid irish and thought i was king of the world!!!

My first bet was when I was 14. 3 pound each way on a 14/1 shot that won. I should have quit while I was ahead! :)

If you guys dont mind i'l show you how i bet.

I'm gonna give this market mover a try.

I opened up pp website around 10.30 this morning and went into southwell. Straight away i notice on the move is Egyptian Lord in the 12.20 (which was forcasted to open at 12s in sporting life) going from 10s to 8s to 13/2 to 5s now currently @4s. I check with oddschecker to see if it's moving elsewhere and it is. Most bookies had it @ 6/1 at 11o'clock but most now are @9/2 and 4/1. So thats me convinced. Thats where my small punt will be going on. Could end up with egg on my face here but feck it i'l give this a shot.

    12.20 Southwell Egyptian Lord

Tough, tough day at Tramore yesterday.Blood bath for in running low odds backers with horses appearing from the clouds (because of bad camera work) to nail hot-pots on the line in a few of the races.

I lost 50p on my first bet. I've been trying to win it back ever since.

Post of the year so far :)
Fade makes a good point about winning money on horses and how difficult it is and golf.
Whether i would be better betting on baseball or Nfl, something i probably know as much about :confused:
Didn,t i read somewhere about claire balding saying that the reason in england in doesn,t get such a big profile as other sports like ap mccoy not nominated for sports personality was the link between horse racing and gambling.
Would the actual sport of horseracing survive if on course betting was banned ??
Would anybody actually turn up to watch??
Personally i dont think there is anything better than a steeplechase for drama ..

As pointed out - a day at the races usually ends up in a loss because you back in every race.

To make any bread, you need to specialise, and know what races to ignore. Don't get me wrong here, I'm no expert, but if you got to the races for a day, it should be treated as a fun day out IMO. Excluding some lays, I only have 2 or 3 big-ish bets per week on average and sometimes there are none.

The last day I went to Leopardstown with the wife, I lost a small bit after studying form all night, while she picked a 25/1 winner because she liked the jockey silks:eek:

I think its very important to approach racing correctly. If you are betting in every race (such as at a meeting) you should treat it as fun. Otherwise, you need to start recording what you are doing and see where you can make/lose money.

    Post Script...

I wish people would stop moaning and putting down their losses to racing being 'corrupt'....................... Just stop betting if you can't win/don't enjoy it.

That's what my "good enough" system was based on. It worked for some meetings, not for others. I'd go with Ayr and have no winners, and in Market Rasen on the same day 4 winners would be produced from this system. Did my head in. Good for placepots though.
