Just wondered, what people genuinely taught about the Pokemon games, I remember doing some college work last year on the financial security they gave to Nintendo when originally released. Wondered what people taught of the games, we've had about 35+ versions now on Gamecube, DS, Gameboy, GB Colour, Advance etc and theyre still coming with Emerald and the two currently in development

Any taughts people, do you actually like Pokemon, or do you admire it for what it did for Nintendo? Or do you just despise it full stop. I have to say, personally, I have fond memories of playing Red, Blue and Yellow when I bought them from Electronics B on Dawson St back in the old days

I played the first few versions on an emulator shortly after they came out...

If my memory was correct, Pokemon was a direct attempt to emulate tamagotchi on a console. (Digimon was in here somewhere too :))

I personally think it was clever on several levels- it was an engaging game, in which you invested time and interest in the creatures you caught, it engendered the nerdish collection instinct and also had a competative edge (look at my collection. NOW I WILL DESTROY YOU!!!)

However, I do think there was repetition in it and it didnt last the distance for an adult gamer, especially compared to RPGs. Thats just my one cent though.

    Howzat for ya?

Definitely have fond memories of playing Pokemon blue and, somewhat embrassingly now, catching them all. I played Pokemon Gold aswell, but never really got into it.
I've got a DS these days though, so I could end up delving into the next installment.

I have finished every version thus far.
All the way from Red and Blue to the latest Emerald version.
And by finish I mean collected all the Pokémon.
I have all 386 in Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red, Leaf Green and Emerald.
All 251 in Gold, Silver and Crystal.
And all 151 in Blue, Red and Yellow.
And I also made my party as strong as I could and all at Lv100.
Call me sad but I love the Pokémon games and milk them for all they're worth.

I always get stuck into them and me and all my friends and my girlfriend have a great time playing through them in unison, trading and battling etc.
Seeing who can find all the secrets first and all that.
And now I'm an adult and I still can't wait to dive into the new ones coming out and catch all 490 odd little feckers.

I despise Pokemon but the games were amazing..really great games..I should dig em out and start playing them again. I only ever had Blue and Red for the GameBoy (no GameBoy Colour for me...)

Im sure its done wonders for nintendo
im almost 17 so i was 10 or 11 during the real pokemon era which id say was the perfect age
never missed a show on sky one was so addicted
and the only reason me or my friends bought a gameboy colour was for pokemon
my bro got blue and i got red
never put it down so much fun
and at school i was in 3rd or 4th class at the time and all we did was trade cards

now im in 5th year and my pokemon years are well behind me but growing up i loved it so much as im sure loads other people did

Went on a mad pokemon emulated binge when the first Gameboy ones came out. Haven't played any of the newer releases.

I think the games a great craic, I have red and blue, and I played Yellow on an emulator. Tbh I feel that Pokémon lost it's magic after they introduced the other 100 or so pokemon. And for the record I loved the tv show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

used to get all the games for the gameboy when i was younger............stopped when that crappy one with two against two pokemon battles came out......................
but before then the games were legendary
have even revisited them on emulators in the past few weeks...........crsytal is the best!

tv show and movie sucked donkey balls though

I played red, blue and yellow. I was so hooked. Had loads of cards too. Lunch times in 6th class were dedicated to cards or trading Pokemon via link cables. My brother and I were hooked. Our family used to go on annual road trips through Europe and these really kept us entertained.

I played Ruby like 2 years ago but then lost my cart and have yet to buy a new one. I'm really looking forward to diamond/pearl.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

    I also loved the games.

Had Blue, Gold, Ruby (emulated), fire red.

And when the new DS one comes out, yeah, I'll get it too.

So what about the kiddie pokemon image, they're great little games!

Only ones I managed to "catch 'em all" on was Blue and Gold, but even at that I couldn't get them all until my friend got a Action Replay, so we were able to get Mew and Celebi.
I have all 386 in Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red, Leaf Green and Emerald.

 How did ya manage to catch all of them???

Got blue when i was on holidays in America before the cartoon came out, so I hadn't seen any of the hype, just read about it in NOM. It was absolutely amazing. First game i've got that involved with. I got red for my brother and didn't put it down till i got every one. I think my cartridge has well over 100 hours of gameplay saved up on it. Haven't really played since then, rented colusseum on the 64 and played yellow on emulator, but i might pick up one of the new DS ones because they really are quality games.

In some ways it's a pity the kiddy thing somewhat tainted the amazing games (although I doubt Nintendo's financial directors would be too disappointed)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,180 ✭✭✭1huge1

    wasnt collesseum on the gamecube

i had pokemon stadium on the n64 but wasnt all that impressed though you could play pokemon red and blue on it and more importantly at faster speeds

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

Fantastic games, but the series seems to have turned to ****e recently (XD and dungeon rescue team or whatever it was called...)
I must pick Emerald back up and try to complete the damn thing...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,732 ✭✭✭Reganio 2

I got Pokemon red, I liked it but never really got stuck in to it and never really liked the show in fact I never watched a show. Their was a guy in my old school that could name all 151 before they put more in. Funny that was.

I bought the new pokemon for the DS, have to say im not impressed at all, this whole rescue team thing.... its just crap. I had high hopes it was gonna be the same format and style as the last games. Serves me right for buying it without doing any research =/

I think the main series of games are absolutely brilliant. Huge RPG adventures with lots of worthwhile side quests and probably the greatest most tactical battle engine ever. Nintendo deserve the success with it since despite the commercial implications they are actually fantastic games, unlike the licensed muck like Enter the Matrix.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 497 ✭✭FranchisePlayer

I only had blue and silver I didn't buy any of the rest of them because I heard they were just of these ones.Except of course pokemon coullesum There was a savage minigame on the n64 one where you had to make likatungs eat sushi:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

How did ya manage to catch all of them???

A lot of time, a hell of a lot of trading and going to events just to get the damn tickets to the fricken Islands. Then you know I think afterwards to buy an AR and get as many legendary Pokémon I want.:D

But this time around with Pearl and Diamond it will be extremely easy for me anyway.I have them all in Fire red etc and you can trade between all those games with the new ones, so I'm sorted.:D

I'm really looking forward to fully online trading and battling, over long distance with people you don't know. And with your mates and even fellow members of boards. And actual appearance and stat difference between male and female Pokémon.

It really is going to be a blast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

I was the only person I knew with Fire Red so wasn't able to get beyone the ones you can catch in that version. None of the other choices ones, and none of the ones from Leaf Green, and certainly none of the newer ones. I always wondered about that tickets to the islands thing, how you got them...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

You either get them by going to the Nintendo events or by cheating for them.
Sweet deal, you get some animal Pokémon from it.
My Deoxys can wipe out pretty much any foe with one hit.
He has his faults but he is mad strong.

Wow! Once I had all 151 in Pokemon Red I knew I wasn't gonna play it anymore as I had all the Pokemon on it on gold too, so I had an ARMY of 6 Mewtwos between lv. 75 and 100 :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Well right now my team is:

    Deoxys Lv 100
    Rayquaza Lv 100
    Ho-Oh Lv 100
    Lugia Lv 100
    Kyogre Lv 100
    Mewtwo Lv 100.

All with the best nature and stats possible.
I'm quite proud of that team and that file.
It's Fire Red and and I have racked up 167 Hours and 25 Mins......I'm sad.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,180 ✭✭✭1huge1

^^ I dont remember half of those pokemon
i just never learned the names after the 1st 150

I remember the cheat in pokemon red/blue that you flew to a island and you swim beside it on the lapras (oh ya i remembered) until you meet some very messed up pokemon or was it a old man...can't remember anyway it made your 6th item 100x so if it was a rare candy thats how i got all the levels of my pokemon up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

No such cheats in the new versions.
If you want to cheat properly you have to spend money on a device to do so.
Nope it was a lot of hard work that got me that file.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,372 ✭✭✭The Bollox

I think my current team on Yellow is

    Pikachu lv. 70
    Venusaur lv. 73
    Blastoise lv. 72
    Charizard lv. 74
    Fearow lv. 74
    Mewtwo lv. 71

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Funnily enough I have never bothered training a Fearow.
Never even gave it a seconds consideration.
I generally tend to try and train the toughest party possible.
I'll check my party in my old Red version later and post it up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,372 ✭✭✭The Bollox

well what I had decided to do was do an Ash Ketchum, get all the normal starter pokemon(bulbasaur etc...), pikachu, Butterfree and Pidgeotto, however Fearow/Spearow is a far superior bird, and Butterfree turned out to be completly useless against the elite 4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

That Rare Candy thing was crap, as the stats of your pokemon didn't increase as muh with the level up as it would if they levelled up through fighting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,180 ✭✭✭1huge1

True but not nearly as much effort needed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

And there was SOOO many ways around that problem.
For starters you will notice that if you train your Pokémon to Lv 100 without using even 1 rare candy that you will not be able to use Carbos or Protein etc, the item will simply just have no effect.

But if you just stuff your Pokémon full or rare candy all the way up to Lv 100, you can then beef them up with a tonne of the stuff. And get them pretty much to the stats they would be at if you trained them.

And if you want to push your team even further and make them as pumped as they can be, go through the entire Pokémon league using just one Pokémon without switching at all, then after the credits and the game loads back up and you start in pallet town or whatever, fly to the Pokémon centre and deposit that Pokémon and then withdraw him, his HP and some other stats will have improved slightly. There are limits on how many times you can do this but you can do it quite a lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,180 ✭✭✭1huge1

Pallet town now that brings back memories

I remember veridian city or something
    oh and kanto and johto

When I got it I trained all 151(You had to get Mew from Japan...) to lvl 100, yeah, it was good. :D

are the old ones gonna be released on the wii virtual console?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,180 ✭✭✭1huge1

Well its possible but at the moment the virtual console dosnt play gameboy games but who knows what they can do with a firmware upgrade

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Who else reckons that in the shop channel eventually under Wii software you will be able to buy a DS player, and to use it you just stick your DS card in the slot?
I would have least thought that would be possible with a software update, that in this case would cost.

ya but i dont think the wii remote would work great as a stylus tbh
I can't see anything other than the ds playing ds games (well unless the next gameboy is something of the same)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

I would say through Wi-Fi connection the DS would be used as the controller.
I wouldn't rule it out, not even slightly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,784 ✭✭✭im...LOST

I used to love the 'originals'. ie. Red, Blue, Yellow.

I had 150 pokemon and I cried when I won the pokemon league.

LOL I bearly knew what I was at because I was so young so I only used one pokemon. Level 100 Wigglytuff FTW :D

I had silver aswell but I did not get nearly enough pokemon in that one.

That was the last Pokemon game I played I think.
