I've applied to Finglas and Raheny for Category A test dates last year and hope to have them in about two months.
Hope to get a Honda Varadero 125cc if I pass.

Can anyone recommend an instructor based in Dublin city centre/North Dublin?
I'd be a complete beginner on geared motorcycles but I have a full B licence and about 15 months experience on a 50cc scooter.

I used ISM a few years ago. They give bike training from their Dorset St branch, although the yard that they use is on Fitzgibbon St. I was with 2 different instructors there, both were good. They will also loan you a bike if you don't have your own.

I've had great success with the IRTA.

Search for an instructor that covers your area.

Can't recommend Dave Lyons highly enough. Sailed through the test in Raheny thanks to him.

I agree with this,he is a top bloke and you will have no prob passing with him.He also rents bikes if you want to do the test on a 250cc,I did the test on one of his bikes and passed with flying colors.

Joe Walsh in ISM, Fitzgibbon St (near Mountjoy Sq) is also excellent.

If you ring for them, ask for him by name because I also had a very poor lesson there with someone else

Another thumbs up for Dave Lyons, passed my test 5 years ago with only 5 mths of riding on a restricted bandit 600, thanks to his excellent tuition & patience! Time for a refresher maybe...

I'm also going to recommend David Lyons. Can't go wrong with him! He's so good I learned how to ride a bike in 3 hours and aced my test! :p (Or is that because it's WAY too easy?)

I signed up to a full days training with David Lyons later this month.
It's the beginners course but we all have to start somewhere and at least I won't have to unlearn(not sure if thats a word) any bad habits

I started this thread back in January
Did 12 hours training with Dave Lyons and a pretest for my Catergory A test.

Passed yesterday in Raheny so I now can trade in my 50cc scooter and get a motorbike now. I'll miss my scooter all the same, it's served me well for the past 17 months.

Didn't think I'd pass as I've never owned a geared motorcycle so had no experience but Dave is an excellent instructor, even for complete begineers like me

    Edit: typed incorrect date
