I'm from Roscommon and the Ryder cup clashed with our Minor GAA team winning the All Ireland which in Roscommon was the highlight of this and basically any year in living memory. Thats just a personal memory, but I have to say - did I miss something? Was it really such a big deal. I'm not a Golf fan. I get the whole Darren Clarke sympathy thing and beating the US is a big deal but............ the whole thing left me cold. I know I was other wise engaged but? Am I in a minority of one? Derry City, The weather, the World Cup, The SSIA, The Weather (I know I mentioned it before but what a summer - got to see lots of Ireland on my hols in the sun, amazing.) Munster, Celtic beating Man U(Ok personal memory again!!!) Seriously back on topic - was the Ryder Cup so amazing?

get over your GAA team, the ryder cup was viewed by everyone all over the world. The fact that Ireland was highlighted was an amazing thing.

GAA isn't played by everyone in Ireland nor is golf, but it was a chance to show to the rest of the world that we can host one of the greatest sporting events in the world.

I believe the viewing figures for the rydercup were about 6million....hardly everyone :)

This isn't meant to be a pro GAA anti golf thread. I want to hear how it was for ye all - were ye having parties watching Sky celebrating it all? Was it great craic? I am just feeling like I missed the "In Party" to go to, or didn't see the "film of the year". Just wondering..... (Not like I care - we still won the minor all ireland, italy won the world cup, and we had the most amazing summer ever- costa del irlande)

For me the Ryder cup wasn't the highlight of the year but it certainly was up there!

It was kinda strange for me. I love me golf, love it love it love it and watch it all year round...

Thing was though, by the time the Ryder Cup actually came around this year I was sick of hearing about it! So odd. I actually watched hardly any of it in the end.

Besides, the lack of a decent fight from the Yanks doesn't help either...

@wow sierra: The Ryder Cup fever to some people would've been along the lines of Roscommon Senior Football winning the Connaught Championship and then progessing to win the All-Ireland.

My g/f never held a golf club in her hands before the Ryder Cup. We both sat down for all day Saturday and Sunday to watch it. She really enjoyed it, the hits, the misses, the pressure, the respect and honour the game of golf is. The admiration each golfer has for one and other. The pride of Europe winnings it's first ever 3 in-a-row in Irish soil. USA obtaining their first ever hole-in-one at a Ryder Cup. So, amist other things, this was definitely a sporting highlight of the year 2006 in Ireland.

The ryder cup was definitely one of the highlights of the year for me.
I recorded the whole thing and by pure accident I deleted it from my sky+ planner (that damn yellow button).Had to wait until xmas to get the dvd.
