How much does it cost to run a car cost to run per month? Is it cheaper than using the Luas?
Depreciation of value of car + insurance each year + car tax + petrol + any maintenance + parking fees = a fortune.

I see they've done nothing to simplify the fare structure anyway - I mean who knows how many "stages" they travel between really??

I also find it amusing that despite service levels going down and journey times going up, that they can get away with this .. oh wait, I'm not that surpised actually - it IS Ireland after all! :(

I won't be garaging the car anytime soon anyway..

capital cost and VRT can be avoided to some extent by not buying a new car. You can save a lot on parking if you don't mind a short walk at your destination

Insurance and tax are more or less fixed, certainly if you do less miles your insurance doesn't drop a lot in comparison to the milage difference.

petrol and parking are the main disincentives
the incentives are the massive spending on roads compared to barely keeping bus numbers constant - car numbers have doubled since 1990 - most of the N roads around the city have been widened

Why is it always so complicated? Why can't it be more like:
    ADULT FARES
    1 - 5 1.00
    6 – 16 1.50
    Over 15 2.00

    CHILD FARES (Including schoolchild)
    1 - 5 0.50
    over 5 1.00

It'd be much simpler. Actually, with my pipedream fares, would they lose much money?

Irish Rail have nothing online but
    http://www.platform11.org/passenger_info/fares_matrix.php#matrix
has the 2007 single and returns for 2007, valid from 4 Jan 2007

Am I missing something or have the Luas fares not changed at all ?
