Two killed, 20 injured in Bangkok blasts
    December 31, 2006 15:40

Two people have been killed and more than 20 have been injured in a series of bomb explosions in shopping areas in Bangkok in Thailand.

At least six small bombs went off within about an hour of each other.

One bomb exploded under a seat at a bus stop outside a shopping centre, killing one person and injuring 16.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Police were reported to be investigating suspicious packages found at another six locations in the capital.

Would that be the same people who are causing ructions in the south? Muslims I believe!

I'm supposed to be going to Thailand this summer...!!! :(

Maybe a change of plans would be in order. It's one thing not going to the south, but it's another having to worry about exploding lady-boys in Bangkok!

...And a seventh is reported to have gone off in the meantime.

After the coup passed off peacefully, I would have thought that Bangkok was fairly safe from violence like this. Keep an eye on what the embassies are saying - hopefully these are just isolated incidents. Are they related to the coup, does anyone know?

I doubt 6 bombs on the same day could be said to be isolated.

Maybe they're in opposition to the coup, but my limited Thai knowledge leads me to believe that it's more likely to do with the seperatists in the south.

    Dave,
I don't believe the troubles in the south have been brought to Bangkok. Word on the streets of Bangkok is that the ousted party (Thai Rak Thai) are behind the bombings. From the little I do know of the Thai political scene that would seem the more likely scenario.
It would not put me off going to Thailand but themn again when I am there I spend as little time as possible in Bangkok.

    Regards,

Cheers, yeh the media is saying that it's more likely to be the ousted party.

We'll see what happens in the next few months anyway.

(I wasn't planning on staying in Bangkok, but my fear was that if they're attacking Bangkok that other tourist areas would be hit, eg. Ko Samui, Ko Phangan etc.)
