First Guitar And Loving It

I turned 40 last month and have always had a love of music and an interest in playing.I played drums in rock band when I was younger and loved it but I always wanted to have a go at guitar, and now at the ripe old age of 40 Ive finally got the chance.

My Mrs got me an electric guitar and amp as a present and I have to say I am absolutely loving it.Its purely as a pastime,I have no real interest in joining a band in the future or anything like that,so for messing around at home and learning a bit along the way its perfect.

I'm a complete novice, but am learning slowly, mostly through internet sites and a couple of books I got a christmas pressies.I seem to be completely addicted already.Theres barely a day gone by since my birthday when I havent picked the guitar up for a bit of practice.

Anyway below are the guitar and amp that I got.Entry level stuff I know, but for the time being its perfect for me.Rock music is my main interest and so its suits me perfectly.

    Heres the little practice amp:

Cool! You have a nice "beginner" setup indeed. Your Wife has good taste!

Most people receive the those Argos Special packages, and then get frustrated because it sounds and plays like crap.

As I recently re-started my guitar playing after I stopped during my 20-30s (rat race and all...) I am really enjoying spending time with something that I am become more passionate about the more I play.

Enjoy, and be watch out for the GAS that will eventually follow. You can at least blame the Wife for getting you started. ;)

Congratulations! You're never too late to start and hopefully it'll be something you continue to really enjoy. Nice setup too. :)

Brilliant initial setup :) That Ibanez is gorgeous, but then again, I'm biased!

Good man! More power to you!

Im trying to get my dad back into guitars n stuff - he used to play a bit of guitar when he was younger (hes 53 now). He blames his fingers, but if you ask me its a lie!

Pickin up that guitar is the best thing your other half has done for you. Now no matter what, you always have somewhere to turn to take your mind off stuff no matter what the situation.

    Hope it serves you well

Thats a nice setup for a beginner! Just be prepared for the whole "you care more about that guitar thatn you do about me" speeches from the missus

Deadly gear for learning. Hope it serves you well! Any problems at all, look us Instruments forum types up.

Good call. Glad to see older folk picking up guitar :p

One thing I will say straight off - learning how to care for and look after your instrument is as important as learning how to play it imo. If it's not set up well, it won't be as nice to play and you'll loose focus. But, as fish-head said, if you've any problems, you know where we are ;)

Thanks for all the kind replies(although 40 doesnt really feel that old!:p ).

I've been lurking on this forum since I got the guitar and have been reading alot of the threads which have been very helpful.

I'm considering getting some lessons in the new year but for the time being I'm happy enough teaching myself, so to speak.

That's certainly better than most starter outfits; it should certainly handle everything you'll want to do at this stage, and more too. Congratulations. Congrats also on the decision to teach yourself, it's good to go to your first lessons with some chords or scales under your belt. Good luck.

    40's only a kid really! ;)

Keep at it as much as you can. I did until I started to get frustrated and then I went to, and am still going to, lessons. Nothing too serious and generally every two weeks or so for an hour. It's finding the time to practise between Work, House, Wife, Kids, Christmas, New Years, Holidays etc. I've just spent the last 4 hours in my attic recording and messing and playing along to songs I want to learn. F**king Brill!

    40 is old???

Johnny, NEVER reveal to the board my true age. :)

When I heard 'beginner' setup, I was thinking Sears guitar and Silvertone amp. That's quite a sweet little combo.

Enjoy man. Thats a sweet guitar, and ignore these little rugrats with their 'old' jibes - most of these guys are just off the tit and feeling a bit antsy about it!

My mates wife recently asked me to pick up a guitar and amp for him for christymas and I got him an Ibanez that looks exactly like the one you got. I was wishing the whole time it was mine.

It was actually a friend of my wife who picked out the guitar and amp but his first name isnt Des and his surname isnt Walsh.:D

Btw I'm sure its obvious from the pics but just incase the guitar is an Ibanez GSA60jb and the amp is a line 6 spider 2 15 watt practice amp.

Nope - didnt get the line 6 amp - got an ibanez one as part of of package deal.
    EDIT:: This one:http://www.thomann.de/ie/ibanez_gsa6j_jb_jumpstart.htm

Would be a coincidence though - you never know who you're typing to on boards.
