is there a way of connecting it through 56k? don't think so.

the updates take about 2-3 minutes on 3mbit. so not too long.

    dial up might work................
look at this:to get a wired broadband conection working, you need to buy a special usb apoter and plug it into your computer?
couldnt you just do this, and it would work, even on dial up?

If it takes 2 to 3 minutes to download and update itself I'd imagine the updates themselves to be somewhere in the region of 20 -> 50MB or thereabouts (judging from download time / speed).

Over 56k you generally seem to pull down maybe 10 -> 12MB per hour (at 4/5 KB/s). So, either way it may take you about 2 hours or more to update, and thats at full speed on your telephone line....

Why would he do that? He already stated he has a Wireless connection which is all his Wii needs.

As useful as it might be to get the extra updates. Id probably not be bothered waiting a minimum of at least 2 hours for the Wii to update itself. Thats 2 hours f fun you would be missing out on and also a nice increase in the phone bill ;)
Maybe use one of your mates broadband connections or wait till you get one yourself (Highly reccomended tbh, bring on multiplayer Wii)

The only thing I'd worry about is if it took a couple of hours to update and somthing fecked up the connection or disconnected you, you could end up with a bricked wii.

Did it last night on 56k, first update was around 32mb and then it got another one id say about 45-50mb.
I dont think theres any issues with bricking the wii, I had to turn the power off a couple of times when i got disconnected (had to hold power button in on the wii to turn it off) only problem is it has to start from the start again on whichever update your on

with dial up speeds,if virtual games are that small in size,i could see myself downloading a few.........................

does anyone know how much the usb adaptor is?

It has not been released over here yet. There are other USB Lan adaptors which people have found to be working, a quick google will give you more information on this.

Just so ye know, a telephone cable wont work with the adaptor. You NEED a router to take a network cable from, and only if you know how to set up a router and a modem.
And if you have to buy a router why not get a wireless one, and then you don't need the usb adapter.

out of interest can you get into the wii shop channel on 56k? keeps just timing out after a short while, or there is a problem with the shop itself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭EyesOnly

i had this problem at first and eventually got someone to reconfigure the settings manually, i had to change my mtu settings to 1500. dunno why it wasn't default on my internet connection settings to begin with. updated in four or five minutes after that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

anyone on dial up trie and download anything yet?

how fast did the speeds go at?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

Dial up is usually 5-8KB/s so I presume you'd get those speeds.

Your not really supposed to connect the Wii on 56K, the minimum required is broadband.

Vote Fianna Fail, I'm sure they'll get their act together next time we vote them in /naive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,176 ✭✭✭1huge1

As long as we get demphsy out...

anyways I would only ever use dial up for downloading nes games on the virtual console other than that its madness
(well maybe one firmware update just to see what its like but it woudl take ages..........)

should have stated that was with digital bb, although maybe increasing packets might help anyways.

    .

the fatest mine has ever went is like 4.5

Okay good 56K is 8KB/s which is what we get here.

It depends on a few factors including your ISP and quality of your line. I live about a 30 second drive from the exchange and use Perlico as the ISP and seeing almost nobody else seems to use perlico as an ISP, we get a decent connection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,761 ✭✭✭✭Winters

Dial-up will generally only give you about 4 -> 5 KB/s. Maybe a little over 5 if your sitting right ontop of the exchange.
