Anyone ever play Close Combat 2 - A Bridge Too Far ? It sounds like the older turn based games. Up to now I used to play the Battle Isle II. I played that game with 2-3 mates for years on end. We used to email the end of each turn. Is it possible to play Close Combat 2 like this? It looks like a good game - more to ground as it were. :)

I played alot of close combat 2, brilliant game, it is real time, but its not an RTS. You can't PBEM it, the best strategy PBEM games are the Combat Mission games, no other games come close to be honest. In Combat Mission you and your opponent gives orders to your troops, then watch 60 seconds of realtime action as both sides execute their orders at the same time. You can get it on Amazon.co.uk for £2.99 :)

If you want to try other games of the same style of PBEM as Battle Isle, Steel Panthers - World at war is worth trying, the game itself is free to download and play, tho you can buy updates to it, it can be got from http://www.steelpanthersonline.com

Also, Wesnoth is worth a mention, another free game and a PBEM system the same as Battle Isle, you can get it at http://www.wesnoth.org/

Thanks! :) I'll check out Steel Panthers. I completely forgot about Wesnoth. I tried this last year. This xmas version 1.2 is out - might be worth another shot. Yes, Its very like Battle Isle 2. Talking of which - I dug BI2 (disk version) out and tried it through Dos Box. Very Niiiiice.
Wonder if anyone would like a game via dosbox? Plays nicely.

Actually you have given me war pangs :) I missed this game. You wouldn't be interested in a game? We could pick one of the player maps and assign a cpu player in between. I'll put this into a new thread. What do you think?

Why would you not categorise it as an RTS? I think it's the epitomy of the RTS: There's no mucking about with build queues or trying to outproduce the enemy in order to make a rush: What you start with is what you got.

Look also for Steel Panthers MBT, which is the modern equivalent.

I would second the Combat Mission series, I have all three, and still play them PBEM regularly.

The RTS genre games all have build queues, health bars, research trees etc etc and are for the most part, click fests. The Close Combat series are real time, but had none of the above "features". Perhaps its a RRTS, a Realistic Real Time Strategy game? :)

You don't download it, you buy it.

I had a copy of it, along with close combat 3 and 4. I don't want to have to buy it again!!!

Or a More Realistic Real Time Strategy? I think that just because the majority of RTSs have devolved/downgraded to resource gathering clickfests doesn't eliminate CC from the category.

Some screenshots from the upcoming "Close Combat: Cross of Iron" from Matrix Games. They bought the licenses for the series recently and this will be their first release:

    ah CC2, what a game.

It had such visceral screams of agony, as a squad takes a heavy mortar into its midst... ouch. The sight of a Konsigtiger rumbling towards your troops, and getting its turret banjaxed by a plucky bazooka team, ah the fun.

Even the help file was excellent, with real WW2 footage of all the equipment and tanks.
