So how active and healthy is the Warhammer/WH40K community in Dublin at the moment? Last time I played was about 6 or 7 years ago, when the Games Workshop store was just opening. Stopped playing soon after. I really liked WH/WH40K as a tabletop strategy game, but hated everything else to do with Games Workshop.

I've been meaning to walk into the place and checkout what's happening, out of nostalgia mostly, but every time I walk past the place it's full of loud 14 year olds mixing with men 3 times their age, getting overexcited about a dice roll, making exagerated arm-waving dramatics at the result...kinda makes me cringe. Makes me sound old, I'm in my early 20s!

Basically I wanna know is there actually any "serious" WH/WH40K players, who play it for the strategy? And even better, who only go to Games Workshop to buy the models and have nothing else to do with them!

    Cheers.

I know of at least 2 clubs in Dublin (excluding uni societies) that play WFB and 40k, as well as a variety of other games. I go to one regularly, the Dublin Games Guild, though currently we're still on the holiday break. We start back next Wed night (not this week), the 10th, at Wynns Hotel (corner of O'Connell St and Abbey St).

Feel free to drop along and have a look.

Slight update. Turns out we're not moving to that hotel now, we're staying in the Royal Dublin. Thats a bit further up O'Connell St, on the off chance you don't know it.

I played Warhammer years ago, and 40k,
Recently bought the macragge battle thingy, which i've yet to fully paint up and get reacquainted with the rules etc.

No harm calling in, the staff are very helpful i must admit, particularly in blanch, if you don't want a load of kids running round under your feet go ini when its gonna be quiet, eg in between lunch and tea!

Yeah I'm gonna drop in tomorrow, pick up a model or two to paint. Does a typical conversation with the staff still go like:

"Heyyyyyyyyy! What army do you collect?!"

    "Eh...well...emm...I guess Tyra-"

"OOOOH! TYRANIDS! *makes horns on his forehead with fingers* Then you're gonna need THESE!" *picks up the most expensive model on the shelf and sticks it in your face*

I still remember during a sale if you spent over £100 they announced it to the shop and made everybody there give you a round of applause...:confused::confused:

Cheers man, heard of the DGG alright, might look into that so.

Depends a bit on how well the staff know you. If you're a newcomer to them, they probably will go a bit full on. Show that you do know the games, and they're more likely to just chat. If you've been out of the loop for a while, and from your post I'd guess it was maybe around the start of 3rd ed you were last playing, a short demo game might show you what the current rule set is like.

Strangely, thats exactly how the guys in blanch did it.
I told em i'm a retired veteran looking at getting back into it, and we played through a short game, and just chatted, with out the full on stuff!

Out of curiosity, what sort of age groups does the DGG tend to attract. I brought my army down from Scotland after xmas (a few casulaties on the way but nothing that couldn't be fixed) and have been looking for a good group to connect with.

Of yea, and what time is it on at?

I set foot in a GW for the first time in a couple of years this weekend, actually.

I go back to the days of 2nd Edition, and it's kindof disturbing that every single model I have is listed in the catalogue as 'classic'.

    "What on Earth is that?"
    "It's a sentinel"
    "No, it's not"
"Really. Look, two legs, gun, human up top..."

No matter what GW shop I've gone into, be it in the UK, Ireland or the US, I've always found the staff to be very gregarious. Not so much 'pushy', just more than willing to have a chat about whatever.

As a curious aside, there's been a massive push in a game called "Flames of War". It kindof came out of nowhere. Go to a con in 2002, not there. Go to Iraq. come back for con in 2005, and suddenly it's the most popular WWII game going. After having a look at the rules, my first thought was that it was 40K with WWII models. Apparently this isn't a coincidence: The person who came up with it apparently used to work for GW.

On the plus side, it's a way of getting 'lite' gamers like the 40K crowd into historical miniatures, but on the downside, it's a very 'lite' game and doesn't do the concept of a good WWII game justice.

    NTM

Mostly 20s-30s, some yonger, some older.

Normally you'll have people setting up around 6.30. 7 - 7.30 would see most people there. We play on til 11 or so at the latest.

I'd recommend dropping by, I was in the shop on Liffey Street Lower yesterday, and the staff seems fairly ok. They were a bit more enthusiastic than your average shop worker, but not overly pushy or anything. Show you know what you're talking about, and you'll be fine. :)

I've heard tell of a club in the library in Ardkeen. Not sure wht it's like though, they meet on a Saturday at 2.30 I'm thinking I'll maybe drop out tomorrow to check it out. I play WHFB myself(well intend to) but have Eldar from 40k and some miscellaneus LOTR I never really used. Do you only play 40k/LOTR?
