HI, So yesterday I picked up a drum machine and I'm trying to get everything working together but am facing difficultys.

I'm looking to use the drum machine and keyboard hooked up to the same system, so i can play play keyboard but still trigger drum sounds wihtout having to dsiconnect any wires etc.

The way its looking at the moment is this:

Alesis SR16 Midi Out -> Yamaha DX11 Midi Thru

Yamaha DX11 Midi Out -> Motu 8 Pre Midi In

    Does this seem Correct?
Both of them work fine going straight into the midi in of the 8 Pre, both I cant seeem to get them to work with each other.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

if you are trying to get drums sounds playing back on the sr16 from a sequence you recorded on pc or hardware sequencer then you need a midi in connection into the Sr16

Yeah If you are using a sequencer the best way to set it all up would be, DX11 midi out to MOTU midi in, then MOTU midi out to SR16.

So if you wanna trigger drum sounds using the DX11 you set up a midi track with
the DX11 as the input and MOTU as the output.

Have a similar setup with a Roland synth and the SR16 - I have midi out of my Mac via usb/midi interface to midi in on the Roland. Then midi through output on the Roland to the SR16. Then I have midi out on the Roland to midi in on the pc midi interface for recording midi from my synth (synth set to 'local off'). I have set the SR16 midi in to channel 11 and then channel 11 on the Roland is set to 'off' otherwise midi notes destined for your SR16 will activate the channel 10 drum sounds on the synth. And this way you can use the channel 10 'GM' drums on the synth as well. Of course you need the keyboard to have 'midi through' as well as midi in and out for this kind of set up.

Basic question first: What is your SR-16 audio output connected to or are you trying to only use it as a controller?

Hi again, I actually managed to get it working as I wanted in the end.

I was sending the SR-16 thru the DX-11 into the 8 Pre midi in.

Now I send the DX-11 into the SR-16 then the SR-16 the 8 Pre.
Also I turned on the midi thru option in the SR-16

I dont really see any reason why it shouldn't have worked the other way but this way works just fine for me, means i can play midi keyboards and drum hits without needing to change connections etc.

Thanks for all the suggestions about getting it working.
