Money can't buy you happiness but it sure can get you a better form of misery.

Sure it'll bring you short-term satisfaction, but long-term happiness? Not necessarily.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

Money causes confusion, conflict and embarrassment. How Pighead wishes we could return to the glorious era of bartering.

There I was in a Spar shop the other day buying a bottle of Powerade a Snickers and a bag of Meanies. Hand over 3 quid to the Beautiful Eastern European Till Chick and casually walk off without bothering to retrieve the 5 cent change. She gives me a look that says "Wow, how fcuking generous are you ya smug cnut" I never realised how sarcastic Beautiful Eastern European Till Chick could be.

Anyway next day I buy the same stuff from the same Beautiful Eastern European Till Chick but this time I wait for my change. She doesn't have any 5 cent pieces and is forced to go across to the other till, the people in the queue behind Pighead are throwing the evils my way, she comes back and practically throws the 5 cent piece at me in a way that says "Take your fcuking piece of worthless bronze you cheap small membered scab".

So that was twice in two days my ego, feelings and pride were crushed, and all because of the evil taht is money. Your dads a wise man The Scientist. You could do a lot worse than take on board any advice he gives in future.

yeah he is really happy with his lovelife

me whispers - "i think she was only after his money"

although if i had money i would be happy because i wouldn't have to wait for the sales hoping to get a cheap xbox360

    money can buy you Love
    Actually, I think that's illegal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,238 ✭✭✭humbert

Money can buy a wide and varied collection of ways to be content which makes the time spent looking/waiting for love/happiness a lot more pleasurable . *checks euromillions prize money.

So if money can't buy you happiness then how do you acquire happiness? Then what precludes you from acquiring happiness with the same method if you do have money?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

I don't believe money makes people happy. I'm just as happy having 50million in the bank as I was when I had 45.

    (to paraphrase Arnie)

    Actually, I think that's illegal.

Actually, prostitution is legal in Ireland.
    Wikipedia wrote:
Prostitution itself is not an offence under Irish law. However, the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act of 1993 prohibits soliciting or importuning another person in a street or public place for the purpose of prostitution (This offence applies to prostitute and client.). It also prohibits loitering for the purpose of prostitution, organizing prostitution by controlling or directing the activities of a person in prostitution, coercing one to practice prostitution for gain, living on earnings of prostitution, and keeping a brothel or other premises for the purpose of prostitution. Advertising brothels and prostitution is prohibited by the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act of 1994. 18 is the minimum legal age for a prostitute in Ireland (Child prostitution Legislation exits to protect persons under this age.). The Criminal Law (Trafficking in Persons and Sexual Offences) Bill 2006 recently came into force making trafficking in persons for the purpose of their sexual exploitation a specific offence, though previous legislation already covered much of this area.

Agreed - while having huge amounts of money wouldn't guarantee happiness, I'm sure I would prefer to have it than be without it (especially when the bills come :D )

Money doesn't make you happy - it's just part of the hierarchy of needs.....

Was discussing this with Mrs Ritz just a few days ago.........When I started working and we were starting out we weren't exactly flush (not hungry tho.... ). Twenty something years later, the house is paid for (and worth an obscene amount of money) and we have substantial savings. We were discussing what we would do if we won the Lotto (I'd retire and devote my time eqaually between charity work and playing with new tech toys..... I should apply for Miss World...) and we came to the conclusion that we're no more or less happy than we were when we were starting out fairly skint - the reality is that people tend to replace the things that they stress about once the current problem is resolved,

Once you're no longer skint, you simply move down the foodchain of things to worry about. Hence you see the super-rich being super-miserable. Would you like Paul McCartney's money ? Yip, in a heartbeat. Would you like to be trying to extricate yourself from a marriage to Hop-a-long Mills ? Not on your Nelly....... (If it was me I'd have a new patio and ban metal detectors from within a mile of my house.....;) )

Would I lke a S-class Merc ? Mmmmmm yummy..... then I'd be looking out of the window of that at a passing Aston Martin/whatever thnking to myself "Jaysus look at that gorgeous car........".

I'll tell you what I think does make people happy....... just send me your name and address on the back of a €20 note and I'll get back to you....:D

generally people who think money will make em happy never had any :D

if your loaded you get hit with a **** load of problems that most never think of. gold diggers for instance, thanks to the law in this country one of them and there goes your money. ditto so called friends who come out of the woodwork looking for a hand out, not to mention "charities" that'll bug you non stop for donations (dont ask me how the hell they get your details, they do!)

then if you do by some miracle manage to get a woman who isnt just after you for your money when you have a family you can gaurentee the kids will fight over your inherintance bringing the solicitors into the equation effectively pissing away whats left of your estate in legal battles. bear in mind you may not even be dead at this point. look at the case of the pub owner that got sued by his own sons because they didnt think they got enough ! think im exagerating chew on this. two out of every three family businness in this country close shop within one generation cause of family fights over the money

this of course is before you find out if you can trust your own accountant and soclictor, and good luck if they decide to double cross you considering theyre self regulating professions in this country.

if lifes taught me anything its that moneys a means, not an end. and too much of it is trouble , in fact you can kiss goodbye to a normal life. if you want to go into space or something by all means accrue millions. but if all you want to do is have a roof over your head and have a couple of scoops with your mates your better off being average.

personally i made a decision years ago to chuck the "success" bandwagon and concentrate on something far rarer, time! its halved my wages but 4 days out of seven im not working and spend my time doing what i want to instead of being a slave to the economy. you have no idea how pleasant shopping centres and cinemas are during the week when most people are in work/school. and nothing beats reading a newspaper in a cafe watching women go by in the summer. ah heaven :D

How many times have you heard someone say,
"If I had money, I would do things my way."
But little they know, that it's so hard to find
one rich man in ten, with a satisfied mind.

Money can't buy back all your youth when you're old,
a friend when you're lonely, or peace to your soul.
The wealthiest person, is a pauper at times
compared to the man with a satisfied mind.

When my life is over and my time has run out,
my friends and my loved ones, I will leave there's no doubt.
But one thing's for certain, when it comes my time,
I'll leave this old world with a satisfied mind.
But one thing's for certain, when it comes my time,
I'll leave this old world with a satisfied mind.

Sure its nice to have a bit of money, it might "buy" you a few friends. See how many you'll have when the money dries up. And when you're in the pub you cant win, buy a round and be called a flashy bastard. Dont buy one and be called a tight ****.

Not necessarily, If your are wealthy you set yourself up for every back stabbing, money grabbing wh0re looking for a piece of your dough. Its the sort of ****e that a human being shouldnt have to deal with.

What if said person recieved his fortune after marriage?
Already has a family and good friends?

I bet there are countless happy wealthy people out there and the saying that money can't bring happiness is something that none rich people say to comfort themselves.

I know loads of rich people that are happy

I also know a lot of miserable oul' ****es. One guy in particular, own's a block of apartments (well his mother does) and he's sorted, yet he's single, can't get a partner, I always just see him on his own or in the pub. And this guy is in his late 30's ... Makes me sick tbh

Im sure there are plenty, all im saying is that you have to be very careful with whom you frequent with when you are loaded. Look at Gay Byrne... his accountant fleeced him. You would think the accountant would be a fairly trustable sort. I know he was prob unlucky but the general point is that you have to constantly watch your back, more so when your are loaded.

Look at the McNamara's there will never a day go by when they could be at risk from attack / kidnapping etc etc. Could you even trust the security minders that protect them? Im not so sure. (Extreme paranoia but a very real, "could happen" suitation)

He could just have poor social skills.
    I don't see how that's a money related problem.

Well if money doesn't bring you happiness then does it really matter if you lose it all?

I never said it doesnt bring you happiness what im saying is that it open's up one to a world of deception, lies and deceit, at more complex and purposeful level then a human should be exposed to.

I know, and I'm showing that the matter is far more intricate then simply stating that 'money will not bring you happiness'.

I'd say the more money you have, the more you want

Look at a Christmas Bonus from your employer as an example.
I was listening to the Adrian Kennedy show and listening to people ringing in saying they'd be happy with €50-€100 as a bonus.

I work in banking and got a 20% wage rise and a bonus of €1500.
    Was I happy?
Hell no, as that was the least I was expecting even though I'm only recently off probation.

Someone else got a bonus of €1000 and handed in their notice the next day and called €1000 an insult.

Maybe all us bankers are greedy, but you can only judge yourself as people in similar situations.
So next year if I get a bonus of €3000 and someone else gets €4000, I know I'll be moaning about it

Some the more you get, the more you want

    Money doesn't necessarily bring happiness.
Money does open up a lot more choices about how you live your life.
Good life choices can certainly contribute to happiness.
