Is the wii just a fad???

Have mine a few days now and I have to say unlike other consoles this is a very socialable console. It has something for the whole family and ALL age ranges. My girlfriend's 5 year old nephew was loving the tennis on the the wii sports and able to play it no bother, as was his granny!

I think I'm gonna buy Madden as I enjoyed it on the PS2. I presume that as sales are so good that there will be a raft of new games coming on board and I look forward to some sort of GAA game too!

The internet connection is first class and the ability to mess around with mii's looks like it could be a bit of fun... and a huge hit with some...

However, is it just a fad that will be used to play retro or simplistic games or will it take off and further evolve?

Personally with the physicality required for using the wii I think the future of fitness has just evolved right in front of our eyes...

I can definitily see some fitness "games" being released for this designed to give you a good workout session (much like the DS has the brain training on the DS). Something like that would do well on the Wii.

i think the wii will last it because its a new console thats not much dearer than the old ones and it has lot of cool features...if the motion control thing wears off its still gonna have the classic contoller capability so i think even from a purely exclusive game point of view (zelda, mario, donkey kong etc titles) it'll sell units.i personally am sick tryin to get one

But if people get bored of the controller and just use the classic one... why not stick with their gamecube?

I took our Wii down to my in laws for Christmas and it was a huge hit. My mother in law who hates television and has a phobia of most gizmos was having great fun playing the Wii. I think if they come out with some good social games in the future it won't become a fad.

I was going to buy a wii, but got the 360 simply because there arent enough games out for the wii yet and I want to see how things develop for it, what games wil be like.

the wii could well become a fad, and fade off into the depths of "meh" in the next two years unless third parties start making "wii" games, rather then "ports for the wii".

wii sports and wii play are fantastic examples of what the machine can do. zelda is quite good too, but is just as enjoyable on the gamecube from what i hear. and therein lies the issue (imo).

we have a Wii in the house, which was my little brothers christmas present, so everyone has been enjoying it. he's 11, and probably of the main demographic who bought into the Wii at launch. most people won't be playing arcade classics on the machine, they'll be buying the chart titles in gamestop or whatever. again, leading to the primary issue the Wii has.

the issue? well, my brother, like loads of new Wii owners i'm sure, got vouchers for gamestop. what did he buy? need for speed.

i'm sure the Wii charts reflect a huge following for the usual EA titles too. i think this is Wii's biggest challenge. and right now, only nintendo can offer solutions. why should an 18-35 year old buy a Wii when the experience is a downgraded (graphically) version of the same experience on 360 or ps3? ps3 even lets you wave the controller around like a drunk to control your need for speed cars (can you see why sony did that now?) and you can buy that sexy wireless steering wheel for the 360 anyway.

so it's up to software to make the Wii anything but a quick fad. right now though, only nintendo are making the right software, and looking at DS, for the most part, it'll probably only be nintendo making the "right" software since, from EA or Ubisofts point of view, making 1 game, putting low res textures on the wii version and shipping on every machine out there with basically the same code offers a similar experience all-round, and sells like hot cakes... why bother innovating?

sure you can say nintendo make great games - they do. didn't they take dev of the year from edge magazine? but in the console market, one developer can't give enough reason to want a console. both ps3 and 360 have a great schedule of at least one major title per month for the next year or two at least, lined with lots of smaller titles that we weren't aware of before. wii doesn't have that right now. and it can't survive on nintendo's games alone (including the old retro games).

The wii is the best thing to come from nintendo since the SNES. They've gotton everything right - its social, its fun, it launched with one of the best launch titles ever, its cheap, and its easy to get to grips with.

WiiSports can be enjoyed by absolutely everyone, and would be a huge craic at sessions (I'd tell you it was, but I wouldnt let anyone touch mine at the last, out of fear of drink being spilled or controllers going flying). Virtual Console is brilliant, cant wait to get hooked up and get a go of Golden Axe, Simcity and Mario 64 again. (And dont say emulators, N64 Emulators have never been any good)

Also, with nintendo's censorship bollocks out the window post-gamecube, it'll allow for the more adult games to be played too.

Cant wait to see how things pan out in the new year

that is a fact... and if I remember correctly, isn't it how the ds started out? lots of games that were same old same old with stupid uses for the pen thing but then BAM they hit ye with brain training, trauma center etc...

the first quarter of 2007 doesn't look especially great but hopefully people are drawing up some innovative plans... there are almost endless possibilities for developers to be creative.

But even without wacky japanese games, more accurate simulations in sports titles would be great like a golf game that incorporates almost every aspect of the swing, and a boxing title that is more skillful etc.

They have to realise that if they simply do tacked-on or over simplified controls the wii will die out (there is only so much wii sports people will play)

all modern technologies never stay "new" for long. there's always something new that is invented that will be the latest "fad", at least for a time.

i'm not really in the video game world, but most people i've talked to really enjoy the wii. it is, i must admit, a different idea. we'll see how long it lasts.
