Help with Dell Inspiron 6000

Have run into a spot of bother with my laptop, wondering if anyone has had any similar troubles and may be of help - my warranty has expired by 4 months...

    Chain of events:
    • Went to turn the laptop on this morning, saw the power light flashing which meant that it was in hibernate mode. Opened the screen and it started fine, worked away on it for about 3 hours, then shut it down (powered off completely)
    • This evening, went to turn it on again, pressed the power button and left it, when I came back it was hanging on the black Windows screen (the blue progress bars were stuck). Turned it off, turned it on and nothing appeared to happen
    • Now when I turn it on, the hard disk light stays lit for about half a second, then goes off. All other lights are off apart from the power one and the bluetooth one, the screen stays black, doesn't boot
I tried looking on the Dell Support site, it says for my model (Inspiron 6000), holding the Fn key before hitting the power button will go into the BIOS. When I do this the Caps lock light stays lit, and the Num lock light is flashing. I presume his is some kind of diagnostics, but haven't a clue what it means!!!

    Any ideas?

Is it running off the battery or the mains? Try removing the battery and then putting it back in.

Cheers for the reply Ruu, yea have done that, probably should have mentioned I've also:
Tried it with no battery in
Tried it with battery no mains
Tried removing the hard disk and putting it back in

Ok also tried reseating the memory, no joy.

When I try booting with no hard disk in, the Hard Disk light stays lit, but the screen remains black
