Hey Folks, just a quick and easy question here.
I'm currently planning on eBaying a camera that's in the US.

Great deal on it (About €200) so i'm thinking of leaping at the chance, but i'm wondering what, if any, the customs charges would be on entering the country.

    Cheers for any help.

Some info on customs duty from DHL website.
Shipments sent from outside the EU may be liable for Customs Duty, Excise Duty and VAT.
Goods are liable to VAT at the same rate as applies to the sale within the State of similar goods - usually 21%.

VAT is calculated on the total of 1) value of the goods for customs purposes, 2) the amount of any other duty or tax applicable, 3) any transport, handling and insurance costs between the place of introduction into the EU and the final destination within the State.

Gifts from one private individual to another up to the value of €45 and commercial shipments up to €23 are usually exempt from VAT & Duty. In all cases if the shipment is a gift then the accompanying proforma invoice should clearly state 'Gift' along with the usual details.

For one off shipments where the value of the goods is less than €250 and the Import Duty due is less than €10 then an exemption from VAT and Duty may also be granted to customers who are VAT registered.

Note that these exemptions do not apply to gifts of alcohol, tobacco or perfume where standard charges apply, even when they are received from another EU country.

You should be able to find information on Revenue.ie also. I don't know how much you will be charged, just be prepared. Remember, to everyone else posting, no suggestions about how to avoid paying the tax, its in the Sticky at the top of the forum. Not allowed. Thanks.

I've spend quite a bit on ebay and brought lots of stuff from the US. About 30 % of things have been caught, Mainly items posted with fedex. tip (try use a standard post with insurance and not fedex etc) I think it works out as a % of the irish value of the product but I may be wong. I do know that it has cost quite a bit in the past.

If the place you are buying it off is not an ebay store you may be able to get them to mark it as a repair or gift and that will get you past customs.

You in trouble now meight ;)

Anyway, thanks for the help Ruu, Hopefully I won't be raped by them for it, because this company only ships via feddex.

Still though, a grand total of about 300 quid is better than the 5 or 600 i'd be paying for buying it here is a great bargain.
