360 - Pc

I'm with BT and the router is connected to the PC through a USB cable. I connected the 360 to the router with a crossover ethernet cable and it worked fine. What do I need to enable me to put files from my PC onto the Xbox?

    Cheers.

think you need windows media centre. When you connect your xbox it will automatically see it and allow you to share files between them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

I believe from just looking on google that you use ftp software and connect to your xbox ip address. username and password both xbox and it should work.
However i doubt it will work with the pc using usb... just use crossover cable between pc and xbox.

Thought it was going to require all kinds of cables myself, but quite oddly just put in the ethernet cable into my modem and I was able to link them up. You do need Windows Media Centre. You do need to download extendor software as well. Go to http://www.xbox.com/pcsetup

However, apparantly my signal is only strong enough for music, not video. Any suggestion on how to fix this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

I can't get it to work. What cable would I need to transfer directly from the PC to Xbox (not through the router)?

Also, what kind of things do people put on their Xbox? Just basic things like music?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,312 ✭✭✭Limerick Dude

well with the media centre software which you download it only lets you stream music to your 360, if you want to stream video clips and the like i think you need a media centre pc which are pricy!

I know you can stream songs, videos and pics using WMP11 if that is any good to you

Dont need Media Centre to stream video....

Just install TVersity, there's a thread on it in Xbox forum

Try putting the ethernet cable in your computer and not the router

ive being trying to setup the same thing all day and its driving me mad, it just will not work.

it just says cant find any computers running media sharing software. try testing your connection.

it fails on pc seletected as it cannot detect it.

ive tried zune, wmp11, tversity, disabled norton fully, disabled firewall fully, rebooted numerous times. I can see the xbox 360 in sharing in the wmp11 sharing folder and the zune one, but it seems the xbox cannot see the pc.

does anyone have any help they can offer me cos its driving me mad??

im fairly sure ive opened all the required ports also on my router that it asks to be opened in the test media connection blade on the dashboard.

    cheers

Do not go into media centre on the xbox.Go to videos then it will give you the option to watch the videos from the HDD or computer.Go to computer and your vids stored in My Videos on the computer should come up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭BArra

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,312 ✭✭✭Limerick Dude

my heads seriously wrecked with this, i tried WM10, no joy, went back to WM11 and now it wont show the 360 in media share in the library option

i wonder ringing MS tech support tommorow would it go to some indian call centre to a clueless muppet or even if it went to an irish one would they be any help at all, i really want to get it working

guys just a word of warning.

I got WMP11 to use for xbox transfers and it has a windows verification check before installation. Basically it checks a .reg file in your pc. Whilst this was being checked, it corrupted the file and made my windows unverifiable, so when i went to log onto my pc it said could not verfiy windows.

Had to reformat my pc and from going onto random forums searching answers this has happend too much for comfort.

I've gotten to the stage where I can stream from my laptop but most of the videos in my library don't appear. Only 17 videos come up. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be?

    Thanks

The videos have to be in My Videos on your computer and they have to be in WMV format

Not really, you can add folders to be allowed to share with the 360.

I thought they had to be in M videos if you are using WMP11

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭kensutz

No because Windows Media Connect is integrated into WMP11. So if you have files in other folders just add them all to WMP11 or into WMC.

hey bara. not sure what steps you have done but i'll throw a few ideas at you.

    1. have you tried the setup program on the xbox site. http://www.xbox.com/pcsetup it should open all the right ports on windows firewall.

    2. the firewall you have installed on your pc. is it a 3rd party one. I use sygate when first trying out the media streaming and had to actually uninstall it as even when it was turned off it was still blocking it.

    3. In the library tab on WMP11 got on the media sharing and see if it picked up the xbox and that its allowed. If not might be worth ticking the allow all new devices untill you get it running.

See if any of that helps. I reckon its your firewall on the pc tho.

Just to note if your using windows media player, Everything you have added to the library should be seen by the 360. They can be in the default folders in your documents or you can add your own folders to it. I have everything on an external drive and just added the folders and it streams fine off it. Also WMP11 and the 360 will only do WMV files and music and pictures. to get your divx/xvids you need to convert them or use tversity.

How should the Xbox and PC be connected? I have to ethernet cable that came with the Xbox and a router.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,809 ✭✭✭Stokolan

Not sure. is it a standard network cable? ie straight through and not cross over. the colors should be the same at both ends? normal colour codes are

    pin 1 =orange white,
    pin 2 =orange
    pin 3 =green white,
    pin 4 =blue
    pin 5 =blue white,
    pin 6 =green,
    pin 7 =brown white,
    pin 8 =brown,

this should be the way on both ends if the standard colors are used. If it is then it should just plug straight into the router and the same with your pc. if its a cross over cable then it plugs into your pc and im not sure of the setup then

ok ive had progress, seems the fault was down to the ip addresses my router was assigning, i manually changed what was on the laptop and it seems to be working grand now

however ive a problem, when i run and install the extender software i get to the stage where it wants to: "Network performance test"

it fails and i am unable to continue and complete the setup, anyone any ideas? im hard wired in with an ethernet cable to the netopia hub with the laptop with media centre hooked into the same hub also, dosent give any indication to why its giving this error, it just says "unable to measure network performance" it is possible that the extender disconnected due to a network problem"

make sure the extender is at its start screen and not playing any music or videos

what the hell is the extender, i presume it means the program thats running to setup cos its called media centre extender, what start screen??

    hmmmm

When you go to www.xbox.com/pcsetup it will prompt you to download it along the way, but I do think you need Media Centre alas.

    Bara

The extender is you actual Xbox 360. It has to be on and the media centre started on it for when you are doing the test. (It didn't click with me last night when i read the post).

Also you still cant play xvids and dvix via the media center option unless there is specific software installed or they are converted to wmv. just did a quick search to give ya an idea http://www.jakeludington.com/xbox/20060321_easy_divx_to_xbox_360_streaming.html but there might be something better out there. might be worth trying in the windows forum if ya get no look here.

I have mine connected via wireless both the 360 and the Media centre pc and they it past the test.
