Need to recover some files/pictures off of my sisters old 9gig ide hard drive. I stick it in, and make sure that my 200gig maxtor(sata) has boot priority over the other one, but it just hangs and windows won't load. Any ideas why it's not working? Of course the harddrive had Windows has windows installed on it, but it shouldn't matter if the other has boot priority? Any ideas? :(

Make sure the sister's HDD is set as slave

bu8t how do you set it to slave when you cant get into the bios?

Set the jumper on the ide HD to slave and connect it the connector that is NOT at the end of the ide cable ribbon. See if that helps. You don't need to go near BIOS to do this generally.

BIOS not required. It should be set to Auto anyway.

irlrobins - you're talking about Cable Select - if you use Master/Slave it doesn't matter which connector you use:
Cable Select: Motherboard :: Slave :: Master

Cable Select is easiest to use. But if it's on its on IDE with no other devices just jumper it to single drive master.

Well when i checked the bios under boot priority, it had my 200gig sata as first and the 9gig ide as secondary, that's the same as Primary/slave isn't it?

Can't do it now because I'm not at home, I'll make sure of that later, and try the Cable Select thing(that's making sure it's attached to the second IDE plug as opposed to the second, yah?)

[edit] stfu macks! you know I own you

Nope - it's making sure that it's jumpered correctly. If the jumpers are wrong the BIOS doesn't know what the hell it is.

[edit]Are you putting it on the same cable as another device?
If not - then jumper it CS and put it on any connector.

If so, then it has to be jumpered the same type as the other device. If the other device is CS then CS is fine. If the other device is Master - then it has to be jumpered Slave. Easiest way is to just unplug the other device and jumper the hdd CS - copy all the stuff off and replace the original device.

And I pwn your ass kiddo :p

FFS stephen you are confusing me.
Negatory, it was on it's own on the cable. I unplugged my DVD Drive and plugged it into that. Maybe the fact that it was a DVD drive when the pc turned off, then this crappy old HDD when the pc turned on, has confused it? Computers don't get confused though, like I do? Like right now.

    CS=Cable Select?

Wtf is a jumper? My nephews here are jumpers, but I'm pretty sure the hard drive is not accustomed to jumping on beds.
then jumper it CS and put it on any connector.

    What does that mean???

    Ahhhhh!! >_<

[edit] Cable Select(CS) means it's on it's own cable?
