according to mmaweekly cro cop and herring have officially signed with the ufc - the posibility of a competative hw div in the ufc? - who wouldve guessed? here is the article:

    - UFC LANDS CRO COP AND HEATH HERRING
    Thursday, December 28, 2006 - by Ken Pishna - MMAWeekly.com

There is always speculation regarding “the big announcement” leading up to an Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-view event. Well, for UFC 66, headlined by Chuck Lidell vs. Tito Ortiz 2, there could be multiple announcements. The UFC’s parent company, Zuffa LLC, has been busy purchasing other companies of late, the World Fighting Alliance (WFA) and World Extreme Cagefighting among them, but it will be the fighters acquired that garner most of the attention.

The biggest of those announcements is expected to be the UFC’s acquisition of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, the 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix champion. Sherdog.com reported that Filipovic’s signing will be revealed on the pay-per-view with his first opponent slated as Eddie Sanchez. MMAWeekly sources have indicated that the fight will take place on February 3rd on the UFC 67 fight card, which is already slated to feature two title fights, and most likely Quinton Jackson’s UFC debut.

In addition to the Filipovic signing, MMAWeekly sources have confirmed that Heath Herring has signed a five-fight deal with the UFC. Herring was one of the fighters whose contract with the WFA was purchased by Zuffa. His first fight for the UFC is scheduled for January 25th on a UFC Fight Night card to be televised live on Spike TV. Herring’s first opponent in the UFC will be Jake O’Brien.

At one time Herring was ranked near the top of the heavyweight division, vying for the championship in Pride. The fight with O’Brien will be his first in nearly a year. He last saw action when he knocked out Gary Goodridge at the K-1 Hero’s show in March of 2006.

O’Brien is a strong up-and-comer out of Indianapolis, Indiana. While he doesn’t have the experience that Herring does, O’Brien is undefeated and has two wins under his belt in the Octagon. While he’s no walk in the park for Herring, it will likely be the toughest test yet for the former Purdue wrestler.

They will announce it at this weekend's UFC that he's signed. It was posted a month ago that he was planning on signing. The hoodie along with sherdog's confirmation, well.. confirm it :)

Cro cop would probably win and it doubt it would make it past the first round but to see them two stand swingin would be insane. Arlovski would rock him but wouldn't be able to finish it. Then bam kick to the head and it's over. I just can't wait till cro cop does it to Sylvia.

I could care less about the politicians fight and more about Rampage Verus the Beastman!!! That is gonna be awesome.

I'd be hugely suprised if Arlovski didn't make it past the first round.

the de la hoya fight was not even a big deal and the ufc was the best they had to offer-the top boxing match watched was 1 million short of a billion compared to the odd million from mma-mma is peaked and will drop off to genuine fans once the hype dies down-i like it-but i do it-mainstream find it boring. boxing will always be the most popular fighting art. when mma brings in time limits for time allowed on ground it will get more fans-truth hurts

I often wondered about that... when the Rubex Cube becomes the new thing...will they all be dropping the MMA and away to the few fad???

People are fickle... remember the Spice Girls? WHO???

My old kickboxing teacher was told me back in the early 70s when he was teaching Wado Karate, and the only martial arts the public could see then was Bruce Lee films and other kung fu movies in the cinema....he told me he had a few clubs around dublin in the 70s and often had 120 people in each class...but after a few years it all died down...when the Kung Fu fad went away.

When I took up MA too, down the country when it was the new thing to do...often there would be 60 - 80 in a class..and that all changed after a while... especially when the sparring was intorduced! ;)

    I dont think so.

I've been dying to see a good submission in the UFC. Now obviously I'm not the casual fan but I think a huge bulk of people are becoming more educated. Hopefully we'll have a similar situation to Japan soon.

    Peace

me personally, I think there is nothing like watching a good striking match, (boxing, k1, Thai)....when it goes to ground the excitment dies in seconds for me.

Its a big like comparing GAA (k1) to Cricket!

TBH i think Boxing in america is a dying sport, americans are only interesteed on a Major scale when its their own fighters winning, the heavyweight division was the golden goose for ppv's but theres no american capable of selling enough ppv's and catching the publics eye theres too much money in there own sports e.g NFL, NBA, MLB the sacrifices and discipline to get to the top in boxing is a harder route than Nfl or such sports, and therefore i think it will be a very long time before you see a huge rise in interest for an american fighter

Theres always going to be the core group, but the average Joe isnt going to buy a ppv that features two eastern bloc fighters

No Millionare its not like comparing GAA to Criket. It's like comparing GAA (k-1) to Aussie rules...

GAA is great and all, and fantastic to watch. Aussie rules is very difficult for the ignorant fan to understand (just like the ground game) and GAA gets smashed by Aussie rules when they compete against each other. hahah

    Peace

Aye...and the grappling pussies can tap out of the going gets too tough... us strikes never could tap ourselves out of a hard striking match! ;-)

I thought a nice south sider like you would be a man of foreign games like cricket and rugby?

I wonder had the likes of Don King, who pretty much the the promotion of the whole sport sown up for himself something to do with that? fight fixing and all that?

Remember that documentary a few years back, hidden mic and camera job, and was it the IBF ?? who were caught rigging fights?

The difference between boxing and other fight arts is that there is thousands of fights on tv all the time so people dont have to do ppv unless its the 2 top fighters against each other which rarely happens these days-boxing is as big as ever but at the moment there is no heavyweight super stars-fans love the heavyweight boxers-not me personaly-i prefer feather weights who can scrap all day long!! most boxing clubs in ireland have about 30 kids per club-the thing is as they get older its very hard to maintain training every night and dieting all the time-thats why i took up mma-as i stated i like mma but most viewers only like the stand up parts. gerry is right about the tapping out thing too-i got whiplash boxing once and the only way i was going down was if i lost control of my body-ko!! personally i think k1 will be the next fad and will peter out aswell

Rush Boxing club and Rush Martial Arts head coach.

Sorry guys, I did'nt know the truth hurt so bad. haha I suppose we can spare a thought that the many boxers and kick boxers who got tapped in MMA didn't have to take as much punishment as you guys. Thankfully, plent of kickboxers have become MMA fighters are are very good too. I think your arguement about how "tough" boxing is just sounds like a great argument as to why it should be banned.

Gerry, I never played soccer or rugby, unbelievably I did "play" GAA when I was about 8 it must have been for about a week tops. haha.
I thought a nice south sider like you would be a man of foreign games like cricket and rugby?
Haha, says you, living in Thailand training their national sport.

HaHa! Its strange because the gym i was in in Thailand was trying to give the Thai's a basic working in ground work to get them involved in MMA. In the end it didnt work out because the Thais just couldnt grasp the concept of the tap out. They saw it as giving up as oppossed to simply avoiding gettin your arm snapped! This was especially true when they rolled with foreigners.

As for pussy grapplers maybe we should take time out to remember Mark Coleman, Mark Kerr, Don Fry, Randy Couture, Dan Severn etc etc, all top quality wrestlers in their time. Tough boys too!
