However my budget probably won't go beyond 250.A Ibanez GSR-200 was suggested to me as a good starter bass for a reasonable price.I'm living near Cork City but I could easily get an instrument over the net and again eBay was suggested to me.

So basically I'd like to know of good shops in and around Cork, about a good purchasing website and what type of bass to get for a beginner.:)

get the worst bass you can possibly get...well to point, make sure its in one piece and all that. you want something with terrible action and you shouldnt really be too worried about how it sounds...most people shop for looks with their first bass anyway, but yes learn to play well on that terrible bass then splash out and buy yourself a good one. i teach bass and i see it all the time, the kids that come in with their crap SX fender copies always advance faster than the ones with the esp, ibanez or any good brand basses cause they get used to it being really hard to play and then they get a good bass and they just get so much better and get renewed enthusiasm, just my two cents though

btw the SX basses are actually pretty good quality and have a big following.
i have one of the basses, a precision copy. also i have one of the strat copies by SX. good quality too.

i'd recommend the OP to get one of the basses, i think mine cost about 209€ in Waltons (the one just past the ambassador)

    here's a photo of it

EDIT: i put the logo on the pickguard

also just saw you live in Cork, if you go to the waltons website you can order them there.

    the address is http://www.waltons.ie

See I thought you were joking until the end, when it became apparent you were serious. A **** instrument will put off any player. Get the best thing you can stretch to and you won't regret it. An instrument that's a joy to play gets played more than one that people shudder at the thought of picking up. That's just simple logic. Those low-end Ibanezes, Squier Affinity series, the nicer SX's. That's where you want to be. If you could find a very cheap Mexican Fender Jazz, you'd be sorted.

Get the best bass you can afford. Getting a bad bass doesn't mean you'll be a better player. It means you will go off playing quickly, you won't make any progress and you just won't be happy with the instrument. Ibanez's and ESP lower range are pretty good imo although ESP basses seem to cater for more rock and metal bassists.

I was going to say my music preferences are based more in Hip-Hop,Soul and more melodic rock as opposed to the heavier rock or metal type of music, although I wasn't sure if that mattered much.

hmm, i'd say a Jazz bass or a copy of a jazz bass would suit.
i know i said it before but check out the SX Jazz basses. :)

Fender Jazz will do you nicely, or the Squier equivalent if you can't stretch.

If you can stretch the budget a bit more, you should be able to get a nice J or JP Japanese Fender second hand.

Go for an SX Jazz, I reckon. Very good bass for the money.

Alright so after a bit of saving and searching I have brought it down to these two Ibanez's...

    Ibanez GSR205

    Ibanez SRX390

    Opinions?:)

As well what accessories should I get with the bass...
