    hey,

hooked up the xbox to a 720p hd tv, works swimmingly with the bog standard component cable that comes with the xbox and sound also works.

when i go into the dashboard i can select 1080i or 720p, which is grand.

now here lies the problem, i also bought a VGA cable and hook it up to the pc slot and ive tried putting the L and R audio cables into every red and white slot on the tv, but it will not produce sound whatsoever.

also when i go into the dashboard and display settings, i dont get 720p, or 1080i options

what am i missing here, any help would be appreciated

    cheers

Hey Barra, I'd the same problem when I got mine..........nearly sent my TV back to dixons too :p

You need one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-Cable-Adapter-3-5-Plug/dp/B0009V8VY2 or http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=34196&&source=14&doy=search

whats the advantage of using VGA over component ? , or are you freeing up the component for something else ?

the Latest Xbox live update gives 1080P from component

    VGA gives better picture quality.

ah right, nice one Kenny. i was baffled by it! thought my pc output sound was b0rked on the tv!

but what about it not displaying the 720p, 1080i in the display settings when i have the VGA cable in, is this normal?

Yeah you will only be given the VGA resolutions and not 720/1080. Set it to the highest that you can and it will work.

    Most hdtv's are 1366x768.

Stick the setting to that on your xbox dash ;)

It's basically 720p AFAIK (anyone correct me if I am wrong)

Often TV's that come with VGA inputs come with a dedicated PC audio 3.5mm input for sound.

What you may need is one of these converters to adapt the white/red RCA cables into a 3.5mm cable you then should get sound on the PC channel of the TV.

If you don't have a 3.5mm jack then I've no idea why it wouldn't work the manual for the TV should outline what sound inputs feed into which display inputs.

1366x768 is as Irish GrumPy said basically near 1280x720 well ever so slightly better than 720p. As the native resolution of the panel if you set that as the resolution with the VGA cable you should get a slightly better picture.

Which you get one of for "free" with the official MS VGA adapter cable.

Don't use the VGA cable myself so never knew it came with it, at least they were good enough to throw one in :)
