DVD_ROM & Clock problems

I'm not sure if these two things are connected (and bear with me as computers are not my forte!!) but my DVD/CD ROM drive has a problem.
    It's not seeing my cd's.
It was working fine until the other day and I have only used the cd for FIFA 2007 for the last few months (so no sapping cds nor even taking it out).

Also the clock seesm to be freezing when I reboot the computer (which I have done a few times today to trey and sort out the problem with the DVD.

I've tried cleaning the drive with a DVD/CD drive cleaner.
I've also tried uninstalling and re-installing the drive.
I've also tried a music cd and it didn't see it either (although that was my wife's Westlife CD so maybe it's just that I have a PC with taste!!).
The light is flashing when I put in a disc and when I go to the run and browse part it says to "Please insert a disk into drive D:"

Any help would be very gratefully received as It's very annoying.
    Thank you

Not sure I understand what you mean by the clock is freezing, sorreh, is it not holding the correct time or something else? How old is the computer as if the time isn't holding then you may need a new CMOS battery (thin watch like battery but bigger)? So your DVD ROM drive letter is not showing up in My Computer, correct?

Try going to Start->Run and compmgmt.msc in the box, then scroll down to Disk Management, see if the drive is listed there, have a disc in the drive at the time.

    Thanks for the reply.
1)The clock seemed to be stopping when off-line but now I see that it is showing 18:34 (when the current time is 19:06) and this is after me resetting it at around 18:15.
I've clicked on the clock on the bottom right of my screen and it seems to be stopping every few seconds, just for a wee moment so does sound like a battery type problem.
The PC isn't that old (I inherited it but am pretty sure no more that a couple of years). Where would I find the batteries & should this affect the 2nd problem.

2)I've checked the Computer Management and it only gives information for the C:drive.
    Any suggestions,
    Thanks again

I tried to show you a screenshot of the computer management window but got the above lines instead

You will have to upload it first to somewhere like Imageshack, then enter the link into the Insert Image form or attach it to your post with the Manage Attachments button in the box below the Submit Reply button.

Ok well, the battery issue can be sorted as any computer shop should have them. What is the make/model of your computer? Most of them take batteries like the ones below. Even if its not the battery, its no harm to replace it and won't break anything. You might have to reset a couple of settings but that is it as far as I know.

    I'll look into the battery.
    Thank you again.
As for the screenshot, is this what you mean?
I've uploaded the image to Imageshack and this is the url they gave for forums.
    Thanks again

Well your DVD rom is showing up in the screenshot you attached there for Computer Management. Is it showing alongside your C: in My Computer?

Ok, will any disc at all work it in or is it the same message for every disc you insert, like a DVD, audio CD, data CD?

    No Ruu,
    It doesn't recognise any discs.

Thanks for your help on this by the way.

    Hi again,
Just as an addition to the DVD-Rom/Clock problem I have replaced the battery and watched the clock.
It seems to pause for a second every five seconds.
Could the two problems be connected?
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated,
    Cheers

is that windows 98 ur runnin?

have u made sure DMA is enabled?

go into device manager and check your primary and secondary ide channels. secondary is where the CD-ROM will most likely be. make sure its not set to PIO, and set it to DMA if possible or something like that.
