For legal reasons, iTunes are only allowed to see downloads of TV series to US customers. They have to sign an agreement with the producers/networks for the rights to distribute to US customers, and then again for each other country. This gets complicated by the fact that for example, broadcasting rights to Lost have been sold to RTE in Ireland, and RTE would be rightly peed off if iTunes started selling all the episodes before they were broadcast on RTE.

As such, iTunes is set up to limit purchases of certain material to residents of the US or other countries only.

Your credit card and billing address has to be in the USA I think. If you can find some kindly relative living there, you're away!

Out of interest, how does iTunes verify the nationality of its customers?
    Address or IP block?
    Or a combination of both?

Either way, both are easily changed.
Hypothetically speaking, you could buy a 3v card, register it with a US address, and bobs yer uncle. Or just deposit money from your cc into a new paypal a/c with an american address.
    All in theory like...

Credit cards can be used as each bank's first 6 digits will be different, ad assigned to them..

Nope, this doesn't work. I was living in the US and had my credit card address changed to the US - still couldn't buy loads of stuff online.

As Buffybot says, it's to do with the digits on the card. My American Express is issued from the UK - the Irish iTunes won't let me register it (despite having an Irish address). It picks up the card as a UK card. Hence why a 3V card won't work either - it's issued by an Irish bank, isn't it?

I think even if you changed your billing address to one in the states lke you say Tom, it's not going to work cos the number would still be the same. The credit card has to be issued by a bank in the states, as Buffybot says it's to do with the numbers. I believe the first four numbers on a credit card are a code to show where in the world the card was issued from, and then to answer Fuzzylogic's question, that gives iTunes what it needs to know. Although as I said before you dont need to be resident in USA, but the billing address would need to be there.

'Course, they are other ways of obtaining this episode!!
