What is the female Star Wars?

I think it's fair to say that plenty of people (myself included) are big fans of the movie Star Wars. I've noticed however the ones to who take it too far (myself included) and watch it many many times are almost invariably male.

Similarily I've noticed there are a few big films out there (eg see poll options) that seem to be collectively (and almost exclusively) liked by the ladies. So much so that it's a fair bet to mention said films in a discussion and be met with a positive (and sometimes over-enthusiastic) response.

So my question is 'what film most closely reflects the Star Wars phenomenon for women'?

I'd say all of them, but especially Dirty Dancing and titanic.

There's really no female equivelant that rivals the nerdiness of Star Wars fans. I mean, there's hardly conventions where girls dress up as the Kate Winslet character from Titanic, Julie Andrews, Olivia Newton-John, or anyone else.

    There's nothing.

    Bridget Jones's Diary FTW

You research is flawed because your premise is flawed.

Star ward never did it for me like that, I certainly enjoyed them and have had fun rediscovering them iwth my kids but they were never a comfort movie.

For me it has to be Dune and Blade Runner that I will watch again and again and again.

I personally never liked Star Wars or any of the prequels and sequels.

I also dont understand the whole dressing up and going to conventions kind of thing and I cant really see loads of women having a convention for any film.

If your asking which is the film that nearly every woman loves then I will have to go for Dirty Dancing.

Well I'm speaking specifically about movie habit rather than 'lifestyle' choices. I'm not simply looking for a movie that inspires women to act like dorks and dress up as characters from that movie. Just looking for the movie that inspires the most fondness in general from a large section of women. For the purpose is this survey they don't even have to be equally as obsessed with it as some guys are with SW either. Just looking for the closest female candidate to it (there is no 'equivilant' afaik).

How is the premise flawed? Is SW not a an excellent example of a movie that is liked by a lot of people (a large majority of which are male)? Similarily are you telling me there is there no movie out there liked by a lot of people where the large majority of its fanbase is female?

'Beaches' is a repeat viewer for many females, likewise 'Desert hearts' and 'Bound', though for different reasons. ;)

Despite having a uterus, my favourite part of titanic is when the ship is going down and all the bodies are falling vertically; I fast-forward through the mushy scenes of Kung Fu Hustle to see the action parts; and Dirty Dancing is just a stupid film about dancing and an abortion.
I've seen the original Star Wars so many times that they're not my favourite films anymore, but they had the biggest impression 'cos sci-fi is my favourite genre. Being female doesn't automatically mean you like lovey-dovey crap.

That reminds me of when I flew to LA to see the US launch of the Phantom Menace in Grauman's theatre and dressed up like all the other dorks standing in a line that went round the whole block. The atmosphere was something else (I can't describe it, it was so good); pity about the film.

Simply put, Star Wars is the female Star Wars... for women that like Star Wars that is. It's just a matter of taste/opinion.

pretty woman. girls just keep going on about it, something to do with the "fairytale" element of it which makes em associate it with cinderella and compells them to make their boyfriends watch it with them "to see that any woman, no matter how low, can still meet a prince. change him for the better and live happily ever after!"

unfortunately all most blokes get from it is "basically,no matter how well theyre dressed, all women are still whores who'll offer it up to any ruthless bastard if his wallets big enough " :D

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...CLASS!!! :D

It's BBC Pride and Prejudice for me, Moonstruck a very close 2nd!

I think there is a good basis for your question OP because Star Wars has an obvious mainly male cult following and the female equivalent is not as obvious and therefore merits further examination :)
