Being charged for parking?

Just read in the newspaper there that they are going to charge for parking after christmas? This is terrible. I didn't buy a car to NOT use it. The place is overcrowded with parking as it is. Everyone is forced to park up on the grass, you nearly have to wash your car everyday after parking there. That area should be slabbed down anyways IMO.

What's everyone's thoughts on this? From what I've read they are ging to charge 3-5 euro a day to park. That's insane for students who are barely scraping by as it is. Not to mention, if you come in after 9 o clock, it's near impossible to get parking.

The problem is people are parking there that shouldnt really be. People who live directly acorss the road are parking there. People going to work in various places around the WIT are using it. People are using the carpark as a public one. The idea behind being charged for parking is probably to stamp out a large amount of those type of people, and hopefully freeing up spaces :)

I have to agree tho, that it is a bit harsh for students. Maybe they will do some sort of permit, or something. Who knows.

As for slabbing down the grass areas - there not allowed. The council require X amount of green area as its in a resedintal area and that space is required. (According to Students Union)

Doesn't make sense at all. The college is surrounding by walls and that grassy area is going to waste - There just isn't enough space for parking. I do agree, that this fee will get rid of those who could just as easily walk, but it's still unfair as students are plagued with bills as it is.

I know parking is an issue but not everyone who drives to college does not necessarily need to , public transportation and those on campus accommodation have access to free bus rides.

As for slabbing what is left of any bit of green in WIT i personally would not support that, no concrete jungle thank you. Besides with the green gone there would only be an extra handful of spaces at most.

The college transport isnt "public" enough. The Manor Village bus is only for Manor Village students, and your mans a prick about that. Taxis are now obviously way to expensive, nearly 10euro to get to the college from places around town. Public Bus are not very reliable and are often late.

The green area might aswell be slabbed its so bad with all the cars parked ontop of it making it a state.

Anyway, it wouldnt supprise me if they didnt bring it in. They said they were gonna clamp down on illegaly parked cars, but they have only 2 clamps so that never happened!

What, you'd rather a big lump of muck and pools of water? With the slabs, at least it wouldn't look like a dirtbike track.

Tis a shame Sully :( I've seen some many people hitting into cars, denting them and driving on. There's almost no space to breathe.

Ya I saw that myself. Was considering taking the reg and leaving a note on the car, but the damage was minimal so just left it of. And I do believe there on camera -- if they work!

im in college 5 days a week as is sully, i drive as it is my only mode of transport from tramore if i have to pay 3 euro a day minimum that alone is 15euro a week, this is unnacceptable and i will not pay it and im going to get very irrate if this happens, its not good enough.

Would a system with the barriers using your wit card to swipe in be fairer or each student with a car allocated a clicker to lift the barrier, the problem is theres no spaces and people who work around the college and arent students can afford to pay,

plus this outsiders thing are parking there is surely a myth.

Surely they can issue Student-Only parking permits in the college and then these can be checked by Car Park attendants or something? Must be an easier, student-friendly way.

As for the Manor Village bus, what is the sense of not running the bus between 10 - 3 ??? I dont start until between those hours 3 days a week. Grrr

Was told today that Staff will have to pay €5 per day. Just of one of the lads, tho none of the lectures seemed aware of this when parting in December!

No charge for parking today, however.

arent there buses every half hour from tramore too waterford why neon glows would that be your only mode of transport

They better not start charging for parking during the exams, because I have better things to spend what little money I have left on.

From 2PM - 6.30PM or something there is.. The morning buses are about every hour and are VERY unreliable. They just come and go (sometimes early, sometimes late) without any consideration.

Bus at 8AM in the morning goes straight to the college doors tho. All others u have to get of a Super Quinn and walk it. Can be a pain in the Irish Weather!

According to security this is not the case. The charges are being considered, but not very likely to be introduced until the new building is completed in 2 years (I think) where a multi-story car park is expected to be built also.

I was also told that WIT is not the only college to introduce a parking fee, other colleges have also done.

Clamping cars in WIT is completly illegal, and wont be done anymore -
I removed a clamp from my car a year ago whilst parked in the front car park and was charged with THEFT and been in possession of stolen property(!!) Anyways I fought it and was brought to court 5 days ago and judge ruled what sentry security was illegal and Im now perfectly entitled to sue for damages(only the council can hire clampers so any car spaces owned privately aren't legally covered to clamp) .I presume now they'll bring in some form of permits to control the car park

So your saying five days ago a court ruled there not allowed clamp carks in WIT, and that its illegal?

If this is the case, then how come they are able to do it down in Manor Village?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 46 mazdafarl

There not allowed- if they are still doing it their retards because they could sued- only the council can hire clampers and since waterford city council dont use clampers(that im aware of) you can bet any car clamped in waterford is done so illegally

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 24,056 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sully

Interesting. I dont suppose you can provide any proof of this (not that I dont believe you, but to use it against the ****ers if they clamp me)? So only WCC can hire clampers, and can say what areas they are to clamp in? So a private company can not hire another company to clamp cars in their car park?

Well there was a couple of reporters there so im sure itll be in the waterford today or something like that i cant really think of any other way to 'prove' it other then that- i reckon if they are still stupidly clamping jus mention it and say youll call the garda - they did make themselves look like fools so theyll prob wanna avoid that again

From what I hear the Students Union are in favour of the €3-€5 per day parking!!! :O Is this true??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 873 ✭✭✭neon_glows

i got clamped a year ago, any chance i could claim my money back then? think it was 80bucks, i lost the reciept though :-(

If it is true that only Waterford City Council can clamp cars, then perhaps EuroCar Parks will need a new MO. I got caught for parking their without a ticket while I (hoped to) quickly apply for my full licence after I passed my test. And I was fined 30 yoyos which to this day I have not paid. Now they say that if the fine is not paid they will clamp your car, so I assume that this means if I park their again, I get clamped. Now, if what you say is true, then please post the case reference, so that I can use it against any of those little sh1ts if they clamp my car.

I would have thought that parking illegally on private property is akin to trespassing since you are not permitted to be there, well, I think I will pack a set of bolt cutters (and perhaps a lockpick set) should I get clamped in the future :D

Your case was mentioned in the "Courts" section of the Munster Express Weekender (the weekend just gone).

Shall be interesting to see how things go when we return tmrow.

OK I was over at Students Union today speaking to Shane Kelly, the president. He has informed me that they agreed to a charge of between €3-€5 for the front car park only. The back car park remains free. If its introduced, it wont be until September.

Also, the college have (or are in the process of) applying for planning permission to develop a multi-story car park but that wont be started until at least October.

And as regards to clamping, thats pretty much known around the college now so they cant clamp. I think if you have a receipt, you can claim back the €50 clamp fee if you ever got clamped. (I assume).

And in other WIT related news.. Wit Students Union will be releasing their new website later today, with an online discussion forum where you can rant and rave over there and they can respond to you. They cant respond here, as its not an offical forum. (They have been made aware of this topic, and the one on Manor Village).

All I will say is that unless WIT SU are going to switch to an external hosting provider (or at the very least get a proper Linux Webhost), I dont vote much confidence in the boardware they will be using.. on the other hand..
    [shameless plug]
SNET are currently running IPB 2.2, and we are more then happy to host an IPB or vB based board for WIT SU, or give them a section on ours (it doesn't do much else anyway :P )
    [/shameless plug]

Apparently, WIT are now permitted to clamp again. It may restart in the next week or two, but they have permission to clamp again ;)

I guess that mazdafarl was lucky!
