hey there.. i downloaded a programme called ulead gif annimator. when i had finished making the gif, it asked me did i want to save it to the desktop. i said yes, thinking it meant the file. but it actually saved the gif onto the desktop, not its jumping up and down wrecking my head. i tried uninstalling gif animator and other stuff but cant get rid of it..

    any ideas?

press the right mouse button on the desktop and go into properties, you should be able to change the desktop background settings there

Has it replaced an icon on your desktop?
If you go into Display Properties>Desktop>Customise Desktop you should be able to check if any of the standard windows desktop items have been overwritten and allow you to reset them to default.

I'm not sure if this is happening though... I mean can you drag the icon around or right-click it... interact with it at all?

All I can think of beyond that is that there's some active desktop (not sure if they even call it that anymore) web content there acting as your desktop background and this icon is overlayed... but changing the wallpaper should have sorted that out.
Or there's some task running that displays it.

Hard to know what it is at this point.

    what os??

    for xp...

    start
    settings
    control panel
    display
    desktop tab
    customise desktop
    web tab

it should be on that screen, so just uncheck it
