Not recognising dvd drive

    Hi all

Just have a problem with my dvd drive - my brother made up a computer for me for christmas, all was fine this morn with the dvd drive (I installed BF2 earlier so was working grand) but just turned it on and XP doesn't seem to be recognising it all. Its not listed in my computer, nor in the Device Manager.

My brother is away for a few days so would like to get this sorted out before he gets back...any advise on easiest(!) way to proceed?

    Thanks.

Is the LED showing on the DVD drive when you put in a disc? Try going to Start->Run->compmgmt.msc in the box and then scroll down to Disk Management, check if the drive is listed there. Then check if it is showing up in the BIOS setup screen when you turn on the machine(whatever the key to enter it maybe, DEL, F2 or something).

open up the case, And check all cables going to the dvd drive are in securly.

If they are unplug them, then plug them back in again.

LED light is grand - would that mean the cables are connected fine? (Don't really want to be checking the leads to be honest, I'd prefer to have actually have the wait 2-3 days before doing that!)

Checked Disk Management and its not showing up. Just checked the BIOS as well but I'm not actually sure what I'm looking for?

Thanks for the responses, I'm impatient to start playing BF2 :P

The LED would show at least that there is power coming to the drive, do you hear the disc spin or attempt to read? In the BIOS, you would be looking for something similar to below, where your hard drive information is showing, your DVD ROM should be up there also (probably where CDROM is listed in that picture). Maybe load the default settings in the BIOS setup and see if it gets you anywhere.

Have no idea what I did, went into BIOS - the drive was there and when I restarted everything seems to be in order. Thanks for the help Ruu. :D

Scratch that - the dvd drive was showing up but trying to click into it pretty much crashed the computer, restarted and it was no longer showing in either My Computer or the BIOS, pretty much stumped at the moment and it'll have to wait until tomorrow evening now at this stage as I have work in the morning....

Try removing the cables from it and then put them in again as suggested, if still the same then it could be a dodgy IDE cable (the wide one).

I'll give that a lash so when I get home from work, thanks.
