Ok so I have broadband with BT about 3/4 months now, I have a wireless modem, a wireless enabled laptop and the bloody thing won't allow me to connect to wireless... It keeps asking me for a network key... Someone please help me, I've tried ringing BT and abusing them but I can't get through to the right department (rather, I sit on hold for a half an hour, get frustrated and hang up) I can't be any more patient please help...

Did you set up the wireless router yourself?
At any point were you asked to enter in a WEP Key, Network Key, or anything for you to later identify yourself on the network?

I don't know what router you're using, but you can probably run the setup wizard again, which will allow you enter a network key (make one up), and then you'll be asked for it when trying to connect to the wireless network.

Connect to the router via Ethernet cable first and setup the wireless. You will also be able to see the network key there. Wireless security is on by default. Thats why it's asking for the key.

It would have helped if you said what routher you have.
On a pc connected to the router by wires try going to
http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.1.254 user: admin pass: admin

then find the wep key in there.

I'm using a ZyXel Modem P-600 series, Broadcom.

Tuxy - I tried looking at that page before, but it says WEP is disabled... I'll try running the setup again

Your best option is to forget about the wep and enable wpa its simpler and more secure. If wep is disabled enable wpa you will be able to set up your own password then - much easier all round.

By the way thats not the model no its the series number. Is it working ok with an ethernet connection?

Ok here's exactly what I'm trying to do:

Network Connections: Right click Wireless Network Connection: View all available networks: ZyXel comes up 'security enabled wireless network' then to the left I click Change Advanced Settings: Wireless Networks: Properties: Change network authenticiation to WPA...

Still asks for a network key

you have to change it to wpa and set a key in the routers settings

    Where are the routers settings?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,450 Mod ✭✭✭✭dub45

You have to connect to the router using your browser - the two most popular address for this are lifted above - did you by any chance get a manual with the router either on cd or in ancient print form?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 399 ✭✭-Freebird-

I got nothing... Sorry for the stupid questions... I have been going to that page since I got the modem but I can't change anything, I know I should be able to but I can't

    I think that router uses
    http://192.168.1.1
    user: admin
    pass: 1234

by default, if thats not correct you will have to find the manual.

It just asks for my password is doesn't ask for the user... I'm logged into it but I can't change anything

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

So what happens when you try to change settings?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 399 ✭✭-Freebird-

I can't there is no option for me to change them... Just a status button but nothing can be changed on it

Just a thought for the future? You were quite prepared to ring up BT and abuse them as you say and yet you admit that you have not got the foggiest notion what you are doing yourself??????

Could you tell us what the model no of the modem/router you are using is?

Is it connecting to the net? Can you connect to the router via an ethernet cable? If you establish the router model then you will be able to get the manual from the website.

No no no, I know what I'm doing... I quite experienced in this area, I just don't know why the settings have frozen on me...

Presumably you've tried resetting the router anyway?

And when logging in to the router you're not just clicking through on whatever password happens to be automagically entered into the password field?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 399 ✭✭-Freebird-

Yes tried clicking on whatever pops up, tried putting in my own one... Tried everything... I'm starting to think they pulled a fast one... Hmm

Who exactly is pulling the fast one?

Have you actually definitely and positively logged into the router? What exactly d you see when you log into the router? Any chance of a screen image?

Have you reset the router via the little hole at the back?

What model no is the router?

are you connected to it now via a network cable or wirelessly still?

if you're still wirelessly trying to connect to it you really need to find a network cable and connect directly to your router because:

    a) you need to bypass wireless security.

    and

    b) you might well have a completely fecked router that is 100% dead and actually be trying to connect to your neighbours network and not even know it.

you said there was no wireless security on the router at all. this might well be the root of your problems if this is the case. with no wireless security it is exceptionally simple for anyone with wireless access (which these days is anything from a laptop to a PDA or even just a mobile phone in the last few months) to log into your router and change all the settings to keep you out of it, either to use it for themselves and steal your bandwidth or just to mess with you and teach you the error of your ways (it happens).

    Anyway....

if you connect to it via the ethernet port you can do a hardware reset on your router and start from scratch. all you will need is 'username'@btbb and the password from when you first got your DSL and the rest of the info should be set up automatically. then you can reset your wireless configuration to something more to your liking.

you've said you're logged into the router, but then you mention a status light. are you just connected to the router or have you actually opened up IE and logged into the admin page on the router?

if you go to the run box, type in cmd and click on 'OK' and then type in the DOS window (without quotes) 'ipconfig/all' and have a look down at your IP address information. check your 'Default Gateway' entry and type that number (normally 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) into an Internet Explorer window to get the edmin page for your router.

once there check the status of your wireless configuration and set up/change the wireless password.

Surely you know all these telcos sell broadband out the back of a three wheeled van ;)

To reiterate what dub45 said that is the series number, the model number will probably be located on the base of the unit.

The Zyxel local page is a pain in the rear. Iv set up this type of router before, and there seems to be two sections:-

    General
    Admin.

The general is when you login you just get a status. Admin has all settings etc. Its a strange, the login page seems to decide where you go. I cant remember if there was seperate users/pass for each section which decided, but its not very user friendly.

Ill take a look at the router that I setup in my sisters house and see what I can find out for ya

I also have a similar problem myself here.

I'm quite baffled on how to access my router settings, considering that I got an ethernet connected there to my modem, and I've forgotten how I was able to set it up in the first place. Even tried following the Zyxel manual but it wasn't much of a help.

Also, I tried to access http://192.168.1.1, but my browser couldn't find the page, and so I'm a bit helpless here as well.

Hopefully, some solution will arise that could aid us both, Freebird.

Oh, and my model number is P-334WT, by the way.

Best thing is to reset the router and start from scratch. Then try accessing 192.168.1.1 (assuming that is the default ip of the router). What router/modem do you have?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,051 ✭✭✭mayhem#

Are you sure you are connecting to your own router/network?

BT Support site shows how to connect to the modem/router/wap.

Pointless discussing this until you confirm that you can at least connect to the device.

If your still listening out there FreeBird that url Zener posted up is a good one but you more than likely have the Zyxel P-660HW-D1 model and the user face is slightly different. As whats already been mentioned here if you type into your browser the default ip addy "192.168.1.1. There is no username just a password which is "1234" and when you hit enter you should get access to some of these screens. As mentioned before you should make sure while doing all this you are connected to your Zyxel router/modem via an ethernet cable and not wireless

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,161 ✭✭✭cubix

Forgot to add FreeBird when you type in the default ip address "192.168.1.1" the default login screen comes up with four little dash "****" if you click login without clearing the dashes and replacing them with the proper login password "1234" you will get the second picture I posted which I think you are getting. Hence the reason you are saying you cant change anything
