How to turn a loose player into a good player?

I have a mate who plays poker with my ac a fair bit. This is good for me as he clears my bonuses. Thing is he plays way too loose and is a losing player because of it, which is no good as he can't clear bonuses if he's broke. I just can't get it thru his head to play tighter. He's really the gambling type (I saw him call a shortstack all in with 78s as he beat the guy earlier in a big pot with the same hand and thought it would be funny to finish him off with it). He also had major tilt problems.

Any ideas how to turn a gambler into a nit?

I fear you are right and there is no changing him. Hope he gets promoted I guess.

I agree with Lloyd, obviously the man isnt in it to make money, maybe if you switch him over to playing sit and go's for a while and he realises that its ****ty to never place itm because of his loose play he might tighten up.

Otherwise leave him to it, pointing out constantly how much more money you are earning through poker then he is. Peer pressure works!

I think I'll try and push him towards SNGs. He used to be one of the better players ages ago when we played shortstacked tournys. He just never got the hang of deep cash play.

I can relate to your friend, I know people say they get bored playing sit and goes, I get bored playing cash games, and if I dont get a good hand for a while I get into the mode of if I get a miricle flop with 57o then I can stack yer man and I'm laughing!

Sit and go's might help alright. I play very tight in SNG's but when i play cash i get very bored too and end up playing alot looser and hence i never seem to make a good profit, i would rather play loose at cash and lose than play tight and win. I know that sounds ridiculous but its soo boring play tight for cash and thats the reason i play cash very little and sng's alot.

Of course im sure someone could become a good LAG player too if hes not playing like a maniac and playing lots of limped flops and hitting them hard when he hits a disguised hand, maybe there is some good books on it you could buy him.

Get him to stick RELIGOUSLY to this >> http://www.gmo-poker-school.com/Archive/PokerSchool/6-player%20NLHE%20Starting%20Hands.htm

Should give him a VPIP of 18-22%.

PS: Not too sure about the AK policy but thats another thread.

Thing is he kinda knows how to play properly. Like he knows how to play tight and does till he gets one bad beat and starts playing looser and looser. Maybe theres no solution.

beat him to death with your bare arms

Bad beats put him on tilt HJ. And if he dies he can't clear my bonuses for me.

    Double lol.

On the SnG thing, isn't it harder to clear bonuses playing SnGs than cash games?

Yeah it is, but I prefer him to win and clear slow than lose and clear fast. Christmas spirit and all.

He does this when chasing. Not good.

does he have any young children that you can take hostage?

No, but its bound to happen sometime. Gambling type.

Mr Fibble, have you ever woken up in the woods half naked with blood on your teeth? (gum disease does not count) Does this player only come out during the full moon? Is this other guy Really YOU (cue dragnet music)

I think the solution to your problem can be found in the film casino Royale,

remove the base of a chair, tie a knot in a rope...(I think you know the drill)
now stand over him for the next online session and whip the bejaysus out of him whenever he makes a loose play. It really makes you concentrate on your overall dicipline. One session should suffice.
If it fails, the Bee Gees are looking for another member...send him

With all the gambling tendancies this guy would want to be a really really good friend for me to let him do this.

Can loose players not be good?

They can. This one isn't. Ambiguous but correct title.

leave your friend alone - he's obviously enjoying himself & not loosing more than he can happily afford??

he appears to be playing poker in the true sense of the word "game" - upsetting him will only turn him into one one you guys - booooooo!!

if you look at his tilt issues - it's just the opposite of how his emotions are when he gets a good run of luck - kill the tilt and you'll kill his highs aswell

personally i enjoyed poker moreso when i played like your friend - now that i've evolved into an exceptionaly talented LAG (hohoho!!), i find it less entertaining!!

...if he starts loosing too much - slap him in the head and find him a new hobby

    merry christmas to all

I'm in the same boat as the OP's friend. I *know* how to play tight, but I can seldom force myself to play that way. I am trying to figure out how to fix that, working with my cousin the psychologist while we're writing a book on poker psychology/self-help.

It seems we are split between brutal torture and leaving the guy to lose. He is losing more than he comfortably can, and I get the feeling that when I play on the account I'm being followed round by some tags who have buddy listed him, so I'm going to err towards torture. Now where did I see those tongs.

    Surely that's a good thing?

I think its good if an idiot plays for you and then you sit in the same game. But if good players are actually following you around they are just taking up the seats that could be filled by bad players, which doesn't compensate enough for them thinking you are bad.
