Just got the new (well kinda new...it's concerts from '74 and '80 actually)...Van Morrison DVd for Christmas...would like to download the audio tracks to my iPod...lots of DVD audio rippers out there but most of them charge a fee....any good genuine freeware that someone could recommend?

While not as involved as the guide above one other method is once the DVD is on the hard drive use DG Index to demux all the audio from the DVD.

(DG Index can also decode straight to wav if you like)

The Audio will be AC3 form so you will need AC3 filter installed in order to hear it in Windows Media Player.

Now use BeLight as the UI for BeSweet to convert into whatever form you want such as AAC for the iPod then use a BeSplit to cut the AAC or AC3 file.

If you get stuck anywhere just ask.

Guys...thanks for the advice....I've made progress but have hit a strange problem...maybe you can help again:

When SmartRipper displays the streams on the DVD, it shows the following 4 streams:

    Video PAL/4:3/720 x 576
    Audio English LPCM(2ch) 48kHz 16bit
    Audio English SDDS(6ch) 48kHz
    Others

I used SmartRipper to go after just the LPCM and SDDS streams. It seemed to handle the LPCM stream OK but appeared to get into an endless loop with the SDDS stream so I quit out of it. I figured the LPCM stream had what I needed....

So, I then used dgIndex to generate a .wav file from the VOB saved by SmartRipper...everything OK so far...

    But....

Nothing will open the .wav file....all media players say it is not a valid .wav file format....which is a little puzzling...

    Any advice?

I presume the built in Windows wav decoder probably doesn't support the type of wav it outputs if you use the other tools in the audio menu to mess with it like the dolby downmix and the 48khz to 44khz low or med setting see how it fairs from that.

But it is a lot easier to just use AC3Filter I linked above as the decoder then use BeSplit* as the cutter & convert straight to AAC with BeLight for use on the iPod.

Remember to use WBIAS {linked on the same page for BeSplit} as the UI for BeSplit as it is a command line program like BeSweet.

CoreCodec's site is down again you can get the BeLight 0.22 UI for BeSweet at this link just drop into the same folder as BeSweet.

Almost forgot you will need the Nero AAC command line encoder as well, just dump into the BeLight/Sweet folder. Then import the cut AC3 files and set the desired settings for your iPod and your are ready to go.

    8T8 -

Thanks for following up. I did download the AC3Filter and it is showing up in Windows Media Player (File-Options-DVD-Advanced)...but the Media Player will still not open the wav file....is there another way to open the wav file...like directly from AC3Filter?

    Thanks - JB

When you use DGIndex to demux the audio without converting it will demux straight to an .AC3 file no need for conversion to wav if you have AC3 Filter installed as it will decode the AC3 file in Windows Media Player or any other directshow compatible player/editor.

AC3 Filter will not work on .wav files you need to change the settings in DGIndex that I mentioned above, experiment with them as I don't use that part of DGIndex too often and it's been a while since I last did.

My apologies as it actually turns out the WBIAS UI is dependant on Winamp & a Winamp AC3 decoder plugin being installed I thought it was directshow based (hence the AC3 filter suggestion) but that turns out not to be the case. Incidentally the Winamp AC3 plugin is actually based off the AC3 filter code.

Anyway it's dead straight forward after this point once Winamp and the AC3 plugin for Winamp are installed run WBIAS and load in an AC3 file simply press play then pause wherever you want and split it.

    8T8 et al...

Try as I might, I couldn't get anything to read the file produced by SmartRipper...so I went off on another route....there is a really nice piece of software (DVD Audio Ripper) by a company called Jesterware which, even in the free trial version, successfully hoovered up the LPCM stream into a 320 kbps MP3 (not perfect...but fine for me)....then, using a freeware audio editor called Audacity, I sliced this rather large MP3 to get at the few tracks I wanted for my iPod....all in all, not very elegant but this combo did the job....thanks for taking the time to help me out though :-))

    All the best.....JB

At least you got what you wanted although smartripper is a very old piece of software no longer supported if you had used a more modern rip tool like DVDFab Decrypter it might have had better results.
