Hi all, merry christmas and all that...

Set up my new computer today. Working great but dvd-rw is acting up. Its connected properly, and set to udma 5 mode, updated to latest firmware. But its still mega slow - installing a game takes 30-45 minutes, it won't read copied media, computer gets all unresponsive whenever its in use, etc. I've tried uninstalling it, reconnecting it etc but still the same, so before I have to rma it....any opinions?

    Its a Samsung SH-S182M...

    From Dell?

I had similar problems with a samsung drive, got zero satisfaction from Dell, who kept telling me it was a software problem, because the drive could read CDs. They wouldn't replace the drive unless I reformatted my HD first! Besides, from reading around, it seems the drive itself was a crock. bought a new NEC drive that runs as smooth and problem free as you like for 40 euro from Komplett.ie.

I bought an Inspiron laptop in September, also has a samsung drive (TSST-TSL462C), also needs to replaced I think, because it won't play movies properly. They start to stutter about 3/4s in, regardless of which movie. Tried with external LG made DVD RAM and it works perfect). So far Dell have suggested I a) reboot the comp, b) install patch for dvd player i don't have. we'll see what option c) is, my guess is "This is a software problem, please call our premium rate phone line to talk to a muppet so incompetent, he makes me look smart"

Sorry, none of that was terribly constructive.

Try older versions of the firmware if you can find them, from my many searches of the internet, this seems to fix some people's issues. Unfortunately, Dell don't have copies of old patches on their website, and because the drives are made for dell, the patches aren't available on 3rd party websites.

Conclusion, Samsung make the worst drives in the universe.

No it's not a DELL....but unfortunately the Dell I just sold to finance this great machine had a brilliant Nec dvd-rw that never let me down. I've tried everything possible with this samsung drive and it just won't work.

As we speak I'm installing FEAR combat and after 15 minutes its on about bar 5 out of 30 or 40.

I'm getting an external dvd-rom off my sister later so I'll thankfully be able to use that instead while I send this thing back but still quite annoying. I was originally buying another nec when I was picking parts out but changed my mind at the last minute as for the same price this samsung has lightscribe.

Also I downloaded the latest firmware from their official site and its atrociously translated - 'If firmware does not suceed then reboot must' and 'You has not to registered' were two of the ridiculous statements I was given - I'd really expect more from Samsung.
