Just watching England V Ireland in 91 at Wembley on Setanta.

England got a goal kick, so Seaman knocks it to Dixon who gives it straight back to him so that he can pick it up and take the kick out from his hands. The back pass is one of those things that is nearly forgotten about now. Pretty soon there wont be any pro's left that played with the backpass rule.

Pointless thread but it just popped into my head when i saw seaman bending down to pick up the ball, i got a flicker of "noooo , you cant do that" till I rememered its a game from olden times. :)

Ian Wright is just coming on to earn his 2nd cap.

It's worse when you can remember a 'keeper rolling the ball out towards the edge of his penalty box and picking it up again. :o:)

I always remember Grobbelaar playing like a sweeper but a lot of the time , instead of taking it with hi sfeet and giving it to one of the defenders, he'd pick it up and roll it out or throw it to a midfielder. All of this from a backpass. It's so odd watching it now tho. It looks wrong.

Most opposition teams couldn't handle Charltons brand of football but I think the backpass rule sunk us overnight.

Well the rule came in during the summer of '92 and Ireland qualified for the next major tournament so it didn't really.

Seaman was one of the goalkeepers who really struggled to adapt after they got rid of the rule as well :D

    I was there:D

I think that was Lee Sharpe's debut for England as well.

Another more recent casualty is the refrain of 'STEPS' when the keeper took the mandatory 7 steps instead of the legal 4. Ah the days. I also remember when offside meant offside.

I was in my aunts house down the road from Wembley, while my Dad and my uncle were at the game. What's worse was you could hear the crowd from the house... :(

Will never forgive him for that.

I was in a pub outside the ground for the Ireland - England game in Euro 88 while my dad was inside.

He did smuggle me into the Holland game though.:)

I think its definately a better game without the old backpass rule. Too easy to kill games.

Weird to watch alright. I remember Bonnar getting a backpass, grinding his teeth and punting a big un up the field for a goal.
