    Lads,
downloaded US version of the Concept demo (came out a day early)
Very GT like........so don't expect anything out of the ordinary....prefer the PGR series myself.
Nice to see it running at 1080p/60fps solid all the same, the course is a little on the bland side though, either that or the graphics are a little too "clean" if you know what I mean.
Whether or not the game would've been able to push a solid 60fps with other cars on the road/other courses etc....we'll never know, but it certainly gives it a smoother look compared to the likes of Project Gotham (which would have been nice at 60fps, if Bizarre Creations had been given the time)
Not bad for free though, hopefully Sony will release another track or two, as it stands you've got one track, 10 cars to unlock and a reverse course.

i must download this and check it out

    how big is the download?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭steviec

Considering how nicely it runs on a PS2 I'd assume it should run very smoothly with lots of cars on tracks if all they've done is up the textures...

More importantly, how does it feel without rumble?

Does it use the new triggers like an xbox or the analog face buttons like a PS2? Or the tilt sensor like a Wii for that matter :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

A car game without rumble, is like a woman without a vagina.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,485 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Download is about 625mb.........not to bad for 10 cars, if only the one track.
Wouldn't be overly concerned with the lack of rumble with the Sixaxis, as you'd have to play it with a wheel to get maximum benefit anyway (not sure if it supports force-feedback with compatible wheels).
Accel and brake can be mapped to the analogue L2 and R2, the default is the second stick.
Lot of people not overly impressed with it (big surprise) and personally I think the omission of damage to cars is a joke at this stage of the game, something they'll have to rectify with GT5, although I doubt it.
It looks far beyond the 1080i mode of the PS2 GT4, models are excellent, nice use of HDR etc........its just the track with the demo is just a little bland.
I'm sure GT fans will no doubt find it excellent, but until they add the driving damage, its still just a pseudo-simulation..

they'll never stick damage in to GT.

    Like I said.....its a non-starter..
Back when GT1 came out, everybody thought it was down to agreements with all the car manufacturers stating that their cars would not be seen damaged..
A few years ago this was dismissed as bs, and its more likely to be down to the complexity added in real-time to the card modelling and physics....something you think the all powerful Cell would have no problem with, or so Sony would have you believe:)

It's still not yet guaranteed, but it is on their publicised roadmap for development.

Anyway, I downloaded this myself..very, very impressive. The modelling on the cars and the lighting is insane. There are minor complaints I could make about other things, but the cars themselves are almost perfect, very real looking. If this is an early taste of GT5 it is scary to think what the final product might look like (and at 1080p, no less!).

The single track really highlights the differences between the different cars. They all feel just about right..or at least what I'd imagine these cars feel like :p Being able to download and view the replays of others is a nice touch too.

    MIND=BLOWN

I can't believe what I am seeing. We have reached true photo-realism.

Just take a look at these comprisson shots between GT:HD cars and their real life counterparts.

    And these high-def videos.

I still can't believe it. Why is their so little mention of this? I may just have to buy a PS3 for this title alone, I haven't played since the excellent original, but god damn.

While I am looking forward to it, the in game cars are still distinguisgable from the real cars.

On the other hand, these are from PGR over a year ago:

Still though, shame the new GT5 was not out anytime soon. Would buy the console for this alone.

but everything there is taken from a replay.

i can't actually control a replay. (don't give the smart arse answer but you can pause/fforward etc etc.)

    LOL

I remember hearing that with Gran Turismo 1, we're far from photo realism in real time on anything.

Take a look at those replay videos and pics I posted and tell me they are not supremely lifelike. "Real time" is a while away perhaps, but if you can't see photorealism in those shots then you need glasses.

I cant see why someone would not be impressed (unachievable expectations?), but whatever floats your boat man.

Those cars are incredible. It's the lighting, looks like the nicest I've seen in a while.

Hey guys, I was at the track yesterday:

yeh i'm impressed by the shots i really am, but would i pay the guts of 700euros to look at great replays?

They don't impress cause they're not a huge leap from other racers around and the recent GT games really don't grav me at all. Terrible AI and they get boring quick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭Elessar

By the time GT5 comes out, we'll all be paying much less for a PS3, hopefully.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,485 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Cars are very nice to look at....not going to bring the tired old gameplay into it;)
Probably are the best models I've seen in a racing game, and the animated driver is very nice as well, crossing arms on full wheel turns etc.
Physical movement of the cars is very good as well, weight-shifting perfectly realised (but we had this with 3+4). Lighting on the cars during the replays is exceptionally well done, much better than previous iterations. You can zoom in on the car model during a replay with the push of a button, and motion blur, depth of field etc.. is used very well to convey an actual camera perspective.
But, they should have definitely included an in-cockpit view (ala PGR3) in this giveaway, I know there have been screenshots doing the rounds with this feature (possibly from GT5). Would provide a much better feeling of driving with a free look camera, rather than a useless exterior view and two dial interior view.
Bottom line, is that it was free and Sony/PP may well come through with extra tracks, cars next year

If you're trying to spark a comparison..don't. It's almost insulting to GT:HD looking at those shots. The lighting on the cards in those shots is nowhere near that of GT's, for starters!

You're trying too hard. The gameplay looks the exact same except for an obviously different camera and some motion blur. The car models you see there are the models you're driving. The game could be actually photorealistic (even if it's frickin' close as is now) and you could still make the same argument about replays looking better thanks to the camera angles..it's an obvious and silly point to raise.

And anyone who pays launch prices for a console simply for one game is pretty desperate. That's not how it works, and you know it, so cut out the troll-ish comments. Those who do pay that money are paying for the next 5+ years worth of gaming across multiple titles, and for what it's worth, those enjoying GT:HD and it's "great replays" now are doing so at no extra cost for the software itself. Of course, GT may well prove a tipping point for many in terms of getting a PS3, but I sincerely doubt anyone will buy one for GT and not purchase a single other game.

looks lovely, but nowhere near the realms of gran turismo. GT will always be top dog IMO

well sorry for having an opinion on what was posted.

i don't follow the ps3 that much and my opinions were based solely on seeing them shots above.

just played the demo through and it is great, but there is a few graphical glitches in it and it also badly needs some anti alaising on replays, as the front grill of the cars looks terrible

but as it is only a very early demo im sure they will fix stuff like that up... hopefully

stupid question...here it goes : How do u play the demo and where do you get it!!??? ...do you all have ps3's???? I wanna play!!!:p

Had the opportunity to compare the Concept demo at 1080p and 1080i, and while not perfect you definitely see less aliasing issues using prog scan. Thats not to say the 1080i suffers badly, as the car models are still far above those in the Forza 2 shots.
Problem with comparisons like this is that its almost impossible to appreciate any quality levels with static camera shots, motion is the only way to judge them. I don't think the game could ever be accused of being photo-realistic, we are still miles away from that and the demo is let down by its trackside detail, never mind the old-school mechanics.
I think by the time GT5 shows up, people will be expecting a lot more both graphically and gameplay-wise..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,564 ✭✭✭quad_red

looks great but it most certainly is not gameplay graphics.

Which is why I don't think you can compare them to the forza ingame screenshots which are photos of screens.

Here is an ingame shot. GT still looks better but not THAT bloody better.

that image is dated May 2006 on the IGN site (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/713/713809/imgs_4.html) - the december demo looks considerably better.

I'll have to take your word for that. Cos the only recent shots I can find are 'beauty shots' which don't mean much.

Isn't the replays using the exact same graphics as the in game view ala all previous versions of the series? And ala metal gear solid (Which uses in game graphics for the cut scenes?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 720 ✭✭✭justfortherecor

I thought that too, was certainly the case for the previous versions anyways.

Maybe he just meant they're not the view you would get when actually playing the game? i.e limited to rear view like all other driving games.

Nope, they use the same assets but it runs at 30fps (down from 60fps) and applies some filtering and I assume AA aswell.

Yeah, that's mainly what I meant. In replay it does look staggering. But whence you get shoehorned into the actual car, it starts looking only slightly better than what's around already.

Aye,I've been having fun with it so far. Have managed to get into the top 100 on most of them. Not a fan of the drifting but it's good that it's there for something different.

You should create a japanese account and get the free GT5 prologue demo. Far better than GT HD concept.

Have to say I don't feel this looks any better than GT3 A-Spec, once upscaled.. Was rather disappointed after reading this thread!

Well that's basically what it is. GT4 upscaled to be precise.

GT5: Prologue blows it out of the water.
