Blue Screen Death!

Hey all! I just started up my laptop, running Windows XP Professional. It blue screened on me, and said that windows encountered and error and had to shut down to avoid damage.

''The problem seems to be caused by the following:

    File:ndistapi.sys

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA''

Any thoughts guys? I scan for viruses regularly.

Is it working okay now ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

try pressing F8 on boot and loading the last known good config.
You can also try safe mode and do a system restore back a few days.

Yep its working okay after I rebooted, but this happened a month back too. I can't think of any new software I have installed recently. I have seemed to be auto updating alot though.

What anti virus software have you got?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,401 ✭✭✭✭Anti

run hijackthis. And post the log here so we can look.

It could be something like a conflicting driver.

hijackthis? I'm not familiar with it, sorry, is it a program? I use Sphos Anti-Virus with remote updates. I really appreciate your help guys, and dont worry about it over Christmas, be with your families not posting in here! But thanks alot.

Link to hijackthis. Aye its a program, it will generate a log file of vital areas in your system and give us an idea of what is running on your machine so we can narrow down the problem or rule things out.

At a quick glance, that log looks clean to me.

Its clean. So that rules out a virus/spyware possibly. Try a scan in safe mode.

A virus scan? I got another message just now, and when I restarted I got ablack screen asking me did I want to run windows in the last working configuration. I selected that. Thanks for your help, is it a software conflict so?

    looks like it.

On starting your pc, press f8 repedly. This wil bring up a menu. Choose " start in safe mode " Then run your virus scan. If you still find nothing, Just restore to a earlier point. Using :

start > all programs > accessories > systools > system restore.

And bring this back to a point where you noticed no problems !

Hopefully this should sort it. And just to note. This will not loose you any saved documents. It will just restore the system to a point where there were no driver conflicts or errors.

If this does not help, please tell us....

start it up in diagnostic mode (I'm presuming it's a Dell so it should give you the option on booting F8 I think) and run all the basic checks - this could be a problem with your ram - the scan will tell you if there's any issues and it's pretty thorough.

hey eamon, thanks for your input, but you are wrong.

    I just remembered this error

    "File:ndistapi.sys

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA''

Means that the cpu is running beyond tolerance. I just hooked my t2300 up and overclocked it 300mhz and i got the exact error. Same with my 3500+ when i try to go over 2.7ghz withiught 1.6vcore.

from what i can tell you are trying to run non-standard speeds ( multi + fsb ). Or that your cpu is overheating.

This is the only real reason for yoru pc to give that. Take off the side of the case, and see if it still happens !
