I'm thinking of booking a week in New York for February to celebrate valentines day. Anyone every been at that time of the year? What’s the weather like?

It can be very cold especially if it's windy. Pack jumpers/scarf/hat/gloves and a warm winter coat. It will be much colder than a typical Irish winter's day. If you are lucky, you will get snow which is very atmospheric IMO.

cold be very hit and miss with the snow, could help the atmosphere as stated above but it could also be a pain if it is non stop. It will be cold though, no doubt about that.

Did it a number of years ago in early March at the end of a period of heavy snowfall. As posted, pretty damn cold and windy at times but lovely if the sun is out.

I was there in February, around Valentine's Day, nearly 3 years ago and it was amazing! There was no fresh snow, but a bit of slush, which was annoying. It was pretty cold too, but by no means unbearable. It was crisp and sunny mostly. All the shops are very warm, so the switch in temperature between outside and inside is difficult, especially if you're doing some heavy-duty shopping.

I'll be there in the last week of January. From previous visits, as others have said, it'll be damn cold.

    Many Thanks all!
I have it booked and paid for now so no going back (Christmas present for the wife). We are staying in Fitzpatricks near grand central station. Any advice on shopping and restaurants would be appreciated.

I found that also. The shops are way too warm - spend ages wrapping and unwrapping oneself at their doors.

Myself and my lady are off to New York at the exact same time. It will be our first time in NY, so we are really looking forward to it.

Everything is booked, but right now I am looking at some restaurants (and things to do) for Valentines. Being New York I'm planning on making a reservation in the very near future for the night to improve chances of getting somewhere decent.

I had been looking at "The River Cafe" in Brooklyn, which boasts excellent views of Manhattan from across the river and the food is supposed to be excellent also. Can anyone recommend a decent restaurant (price is somewhat of an afterthought if the food is not raw fish based, the place is reputable, looks impressive, romantic).

Any advice or recommendations at all for New York (primarily Manhattan) during February would be grately appreciated.

Also just to confirm (apologies for stupid question), to cross the pond and granted access to the States, do Irish Citizens (holder of Irish passport) require any special visa for entry to the states. To date I read up on the Visa Waver Program, which entitles the holder of an Irish passport for e.g. access to the states for up to 90 days with just the Irish passport. Is this true, or is there anything else required?

Dont want to be heading off on the day and realise we should have had some paperwork already completed before then.

    Cheers

    you don't need anything.

You will need to fill out a customs form, but this will be given to you upon checkin or in the plane itself. Just some basic questions. Nothing to worry about.

Been there the first week in Feb about 2 years ago at the end of that maga snow storm they had. Was pretty cold but nothing a decent jacket, gloves and a hat couldn't fix. If you are doing loads of walking, you would be glad of the lower temperature - the warmer months can get mental warm.

It was about 20 degree there over the weekend.Really really warm for that time of year.
I went to some nice restaurants. Depends on your price range really.
Check menupages.com or get the Zagat restaurant guide. We used them to find some lovely places.

I live in NYC and it would be very hard to predict the weather. it was 22 degrees here on Saturday, and is freezing and snowing today.

As for restaurants, my favourite place is Dylan Prime - www.dylanprime.com - a really atmospheric, romantic (and expensive!) steakhouse with excellent food and cocktails.

Went at the same time last year, which was when the big blizzard was so as you can imagine there was lots of snow. But it got quite warm a few days later, so prepare for everything

Was there before during a blizzard and snowed most of the week. If you're sticking to Manhatten you'll be fine. Wear layers of clothing as chances are you'll be in and out of shops, resteraunts etc.

By Dublin standards the prices are fine, lunch looks particularly good value.

u might be surprised by the weather, jus returned from NY and didnt even bother wearing my coat most of the time, some guys were walkin around in t-shirts, which is very unusual for this time of year. weather can change very quickly tho and can be unpredictable....
