Well I'm excited. Of course, I'll have to see what kinda price this thing is gonna fetch before I get too excited, but there's been murmerings for a long while now about Ibanez releasing a production 8 String, and that it was supposed to debut this time last year, so I find it a little hard not to have my interest piqued by this revelation.

I dont really see the point in all those extra strings tbh. But if it was cheap i'd nearly buy it for the craic. I dont know of any other production 8-strings, KH probably does.

Im more looking forward to the 20th Anniversary jem. Probably fairly swish looking

There are none. This'll be the first ever, so aside from getting something custom built from one of the few luthiers who'd be willing to build one, this Ibanez one would be your only man.

Don't know if I'd be bothered. Often toyed with the idea of a seven for that extra low range while still being able to get high (hehe) but the 8 would just be totally unplayable IMO. Imagine the width of the fret board!! No slick over the top-ness here!

EMG 808's afaik. Not that im too pushed, i think we all know KH is the only guy with a stiffy at the thought of a 8 string.....:D

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

808's? Didn't know they even existed. I would have thought they'd be using the bass pickup (which is identical anyway). I know SD have been making customs 8 strings pickups for a couple of years now.

Well i wont know for sure until Namm in Jan. But thats what im told. Im pretty sure this will be a once off, they will sell it this year and discontinue it next yr. As interesting as it is, i dont think there will be a huge market for a 8 string. (unless KH wins the lotto)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Yeah, it's seems to be a phase. Kinda like the baritone phase a couple of years back.

Yeah, anytime something new is realeased its just to cater for a market at the moment. I dont see the market for 8 strings lasting too long.

Nope. I've a serious boudan for this too. I'll be buying one straight away if it has a floyd of some sort.

Again, this isnt confirmed till its officially unveiled, but i hear it has a fixed edge bridge. ie it looks and works like an Ibanez trem, just doesnt pivot at all. There was a JS guitar like that a couple of years ago

1300 isn't too bad. I'd imagine guitarbargains would be about 1000-1100 then.

No doubt it will be about 3 grand in the shops here:D

(Seriously, i was im a mesa dealer there yesterday, and they had 2x12s for E1100. Thats just stupid, what kind of mark up do they have? I think they cost maybe 5 or 6 hundred dollars in the states:mad: )

I suppose that's why shops here lose out on my business to online stores.

I bought a set of strings in town the other day... €8.95!

I'm going to buy a large amount of them off ebay in the new year... I just don't know how you can justify asking that much for a set of strings.

Music shops need a good kick up the arse. There are always going to be savings elsewhere, but in the last five years, most other sellers have tried to close the gap. I mean, obviously, you can save a few quid buying a digital camera or something online, but not the huge percentages you see here.

I could buy a mesa 2x12 (or just about anything else) off guitar bargains and sell it cheaper than musician inc, and still make a hefty profit. Surely they buy them at a cheaper price than I can buy one for.

€9 Hungus? Christ, I bought some in town for €7 then came home and order 25 packs or so for €50.

I know, I was disgusted, but I needed strings badly, and couldn't wait for something ordered online to be delivered.

I'm gonna get a few sets of 3 off ebay in the new year.

    Aye. Anyway, 8 string Ibanezs...

Where can you get 25 packs for E50, and are they decent enough strings?

    Yes... 8 String Ibanezs.

So, Jan 17th they're being unveiled to the public, but when do you reckon they'll actually go on sale in places like Thomann?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

Pretty early in the year usually. They usually start full scale production in Dec/Jan. They will show the RRP in dollars at Namm, you can do a bit of a comparison with existing models to make a rough guess at what the price in thomann will be.

Better put a few more coins in the Tardis (Yes, I've got a Doctor Who money box! :D ) and hope there'll be enough in it when the time comes.

I'm not really bothered about the EMG 808s though, so they might need replacing.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

But I would imagine that 808's aren't swappable, same as the 707s

They're perfectly swapable, it's just that the route for them isn't very aesthetically pleasing. I do believe you can get replacement covers for ordinary sized pickups, so that it doesn't look too horrible.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Last time I checked, the body of the 707 was much bigger than a normal humbucker and pickup rings wouldn't fit...

Who said anything about pickup rings? Most Ibanez have direct mount pickups. I've seen pics of a couple of guitars that had the 707 route, and normal sized pickups fitted in fine, just with a bit of space left over.

Fair enough. Spose you could always make a pickguard for the 8 string... That would look quite interesting actually.

Oooh, a Diamond Plate pickguard! Now that idea I like very muchly. :D

Aye but like fey said, you have to make it, or get it made. Lot of hassle and expense.

Yeah, well at this stage I don't even know if I'll be getting the 8 String or not, so no harm in running through some ideas.

    P100013.JPG

30" scale length, tuned (from high to low) D-A-F-C-G-D-A-E

    allegedly

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

That some funky tuning. Doesn't do anything for me but I'd like a Musicman in that finish.

    Nope, not a fan.

That ain't the production guitar though Doc. That's an LACS model they did for NAMM last year.

Pity, because I'd love that finish.

Hahaha... on the Telecaster Discussion Page, there's the same thread but with a slightly less enthusiastic OP. Hehe. The phrase 'anyone need an ironing board' is used.
