A technically illiterate mate bought a Cowon A2, and asked me to come over and set up his 'iPod' last night. Seriously though, Sales people must love when people like this come in. I've never seen a crappier unit in terms of Software. I'm really hoping you boardsies can help me out, to put music on the Device, as far as I can see, you must :

Open App 1, get the CD Track Names, Rip the Music, and store it in a temporary folder.
Open App 2, convert the WAV Files to Ogg (Couldn't find Mp3 as an option).
Delete the temp WAV Files Manually
Manually transfer the Ogg Files to the Cowon.

The most un-user friendly apps I've ever come across. The unit itself is great, but the software sucks. Anyone have any recommendation for software with iTunes like simplicity for my clueless mate?

You dont have to use the supplied software as all Cowon players are drag and drop. Setup a folder called say "Music" and then separate folders for artists, divide the alphabet down into 4 folders and copy each CD into its relevant folder - do this on the computer and then when done simply copy and paste to the A2. You can create as many folders as you want in terms of how you want to arrange your music. You can still use iTunes or Media Player etc to actually record your music, just save it to the folders you have created.

Its down to personal preferences really in terms of the drag and drop system that Cowon use against what Apple or Creative use. A lot of people already have their music stored on the pc in such a way that they can easily browse and its a lot easier then to use the same system on their MP3 player.

Lots of info on the following site on how to get the most from the A2 or any other Cowon product.

PS. The A2 has been credited as one of the best PMP's on the market so I think the sales people in your friends case acted as good sales people should and sold an excellent bit of kit :)

What Felixdhc said... plus: I find the JetAudio VX software quite useful and generally excellent. It's not exactly a "for dummies" product but that wasn't what I was expecting - I was expecting something fully featured with all the bells and whistles and options for ripping, converting, recording, listening to streaming audio and then some more - I was buying a COWON and not an iPod after all.
