looking to take up MA again

    as teh subjject says.

I'm living in the swords area of dublin and normally only have weekends free but have a car so can travel.

over the years I've done Kempo, Shotokan and Kickboxing. I'm looking to get back into Ma after at least 6 years of inactivity but havent a clue where to start or what syle to adopt.I'm looking for something that will help me from a physical/healt pov but as i'm in college 3 nights a week and working full time may help with relieve stress. I use to just go to teh gym and do some weight training and found that relkieve stress but also very boring and mundain as i trained alone.

I found Kickboxing good from the physical and fitness, but it lacked the ritualism i guess that i associate with MA.

one of my Shotakan clubs was too involved in ritual and i felt here was a lack of progress, I started off as an adult white belt but had preivously achieve a green belt in Kempo (3 years training) so felt the progress slow.

I started in Kempo at 16 after being mugged and this club was initially good because it stared small, but eventually it began to involve a lot of children i'm in no way criticising teh training of children, i believe that it can instil confidence and respect from a young age and they ran both classes side by side and a most of the time was spend just standing in line practicing your punches and blocks on the air if you know what i mean. so i quickly lost interest in this club but moved to a more adult orientated one in the same association. but again found it was then very combat orientated which was fine but very little time was spent of form or Kata until near a grading then almost every week was spent just working on those. and it was frowned upon if you did not want to grade when one was coming up or if you missed a class for any reason other than sever family illness.

when i say ritual I don't mean bowing all the time and so on but the spitritual side and phylosophy i guess. I admire Bruce Lee not because he could take on 20 guys without breaking a sweat (i know its a movie) but more becuase of his determination in evolving the art and his idea of combinng all styles, taking what is good from everything and mixing it up.

any ideas ofd where to start would be great, also getting on in years so I'm not looking to start anything full contact though when i was kick boxing we trained and sparred full contact.

    Thanks

If you're looking for ritual and not full contact then Aikido might be the way to go. Theres a class in Colaiste Choilm. Mate of mine did it and thought it was enjoyable. MaeveD who posts on here can help you out.

when i say ritual i don't mean all teh bowing and stuff, though i feel this is important to instil respect and also to me shows a sign of dedication that you change yourself to follow these "rules".

Its hard for me to explain what exactly i mean by ritual, probably the wrong choice of words. what i mean is something that can center me, help me focus. I suffered a lot as a teenager with anger issues and lashed out a lot but MA i feel helped me to control this, even today 15 years after I began training i find myself quick to anger but slow to loose control of that anger. I've been in situations where people have threatened me with knicvves and did not react other than laugh at them. the person with the knife was mentally unstable and i honestly felt no actual threat other than maybe wetting myslef from the humour of teh situation, and not the actual threat of bodily violence. was it because i have an avenue to vest this anger on teh floor? no cos my instructors would kick my ass if i lashed out in anger and unneccessary force, even in the later years while training full contact they constantly reminded us that even though we could hit so hard, in the hall was it completly necessary. it was enough to know you could do it. I feel their teachings thought me this self control and i guess that is what I am trying to recapture. I feel part of the discipline and respect driven home by the ritual in my clubs helped instil this self control and respect of others if you follow me. even just the simple act of bowing when entering the Dojo, or if you had to count out while doing drills then do it in japanese etc.

I have thought about Aikido and possibly Tai Chi so i'll look into that thanks for the help.

ats from your post I don't think our Aikido club is the kind you're looking for... also your reaction to being threatened with a weapon seems very odd!!!!

We're a very relaxed and virtually ritual/bowing etc free club... but why not come down and have a look after Christmas and see for yourself.

Were back on the mat on Mon 8th Jan... classes are Mondays and Wednesdays 7.30-9.30pm Coláiste Choilm, Main Street, Swords. There's a 4 week beginner's course starting on Wednesday 24th January.

There's always BJJ too if you want to have a look... Tuesdays and Thursdays 7.00-8.30pm in Backstreet Dance Studios, Airside Retail Park. We've just finished a beginners course but there will be another one coming up in Feb/Mar 07.

If you have a car your spoiled for choice on the northside.

You've Judo in both Swords & Portmarnock, check out www.swordsjudo.com

Then in Baldoyle you've got Andy Ryan's Straight Blast Gym (SBGn). Check 'em out at www.sbgnorthside.com

Or if you liked the kickboxing you've got Liam McConalogue's Mugendo kickboxing in Chanel College on Mondays and Thursdays from 19:00hrs. You can contact Liam at www.safe.ie IMHO Liam is probably one of the best fitness coaches around. Liam teach's full & semi contact kickboxing & has alot of competing fighter's.

Oh, apart from Maeve in Swords you've also got Eugene McQuillan teaching Hepkido, but thats enough said about that one ;)

And last but not least. Welcome to the forum.

Eugene has no classes in Coláiste Choilm anymore, apparently he's opening up his own place in Swords in the new year.....

    hiya
    i live in swords.
here are a lot of clubs in alsaa (open to non members). I'm in the gym there but haven't used any of the MA clubs.they have classes sat and sun. mostly karate or tkd.

I did kickboxing for a while in the Image fitness Studio. It was 6 sheets a class and a super workout. i was mon, thurs and fri but I left about a year ago so it maybe out of date. Only complaint was no sparring alL pads.

Baldoyle boxing club do a sunday morning class . but i've never been only heard that it was a decent club.

If you can make it to Drumcondra, you could try Krav Maga at the Irene Sports centre! Aidan Carroll is the instructor there, have a look at www.kravmaga.ie Aidan is a top man with a background in kickboxing also!

There a guy (Colm)in Skerries who teaches Silat to a small group of students in Skerries. He also does some private teaching. You get his contact number on www.silateurope.com if you interested. We also have a group that meets up regularly on Saturday mornings in Walkinstown. So you more than welcome if any of these help.
