Error message regarding remote - battery problem?

I hope its to do with the batteries...I got an onscreen message saying that the Wii has lost communication with the remote, and then it would go back to normal for 5 seconds, then the message again, then back to normal. I was in the middle of playing Zelda so I just started using my other remote which worked fine. But is this just a battery issue?

Also while I'm here, it'd be nice if there was a way of turning off or locking the remotes. I had the Wii and remotes in a bag and kept them in a bag for a while and I think every time the buttons were pressed it was activating the remote which was obviously using up batteries. Maybe even as they were being moved about.

Press the home button and it'll let you know the battery status of the remotes.

If it is the batteries, that does seem kinda quick :(

Easy way to "lock" the remotes for transporting them... pull out one of the batteries! ;)

When the batteries are almost gone they'll warn you, come back on, warn you again and keep urging you to go to the main screen (ie: save and go).

The batteries actually do go shockingly quick. I had to change the original ones on the first saturday night (after getting it friday morning). I think the second set have lasted a little bit longer, but either way it seems to be an average of 30ish hours play per 2xAA batteries.

Anyone else notice this? Can't wait for the charging docs to be released.

batteries don't go that quick, i've racked up about 20 hours on zelda and another 4-5 hours on wiisports, plus i'd say another hour in menus and stuff so like 25 hours gone and the batteries have only gone down one bar. fairly good me thinks

This doesnt necessarily mean the rest of the bars will go down in as much time.

Only ever gotten that message when the remote was left too long and switched itself off, but I do occasionally get less than optimal performance - if you press the 'home' button on the remote and goto Remote Settings at the bottom you can reconnect them, which usually solves any issues for me.

Only ever happened when I either left the Wiimote down for too long and it switched itself off, or if I moved too far away from the Wii so as it was out of range.

Sounds like either a faulty Wiimote or empty batteries.
Be sure to press the home button and check your battery gauge.
