Launch a website??

At work at the moment we are setting up a website and I wanted to ask if anyone has actually launched a website before? Did you invite company clients? The press? Is this actually done? We want to do it as cheaply as possible? Is it possible to send a press release announcing launch without officially having a "do"?
    Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks.

it depends on the purpose of the site and the nature of your business. i have been involved with a number of charity/voluntary org websites, and they usually have launches.

companies on the other hand normally send a mail around to clients, and take out an ad in paper telling potential clients about new website.

my advice if you want to do it cheaply is don't have a launch, send an email, take out an ad, and advertise your website address at every possible chance (stationery/vehicles/ads etc.)
