    Hey,

I opened up my Dell Optiplex CPU last nite to reattach a part that had fallen inside. It was switched off and i removed the power cord. I opened the casing, reattached the port and closed the casing. I reattached all the bits and bobs and then the power supply. The on/off button green light was on and when i pressed the button nothing happened - no noise no screen messages. I switched the plug off at the mains left it a while and switched plug on again. Green on/off light came straight on and again nothing else happens. Is it fecked??
    cheers

i think a bit more detail is needed.. what part did you reattach? what was wrong in the first place? Best bet is to check all the cables and try reseating the video card and ram.
Also if you actually removed the psu jack from the motherboard make sure you put back the main one and the smaller 4pin one.

It was the monitor cable port. It needed to be reattached to the casing. I didnt actually remove / interfere with anything else.

So it was a graphics card similar to say this which had come away from the back of the case? Try taking the graphics card out completely and putting it back in again, also try wiping away any dust around the graphics card slot. Are you sure you didnt hit off anything else like the ram or knock out any internal cables?

yeah its similar. think its a radeon - its an extra one I installed myself a couple of yrs ago. The actual card didnt come out of its slot, just the port from the casing. I may have hit off something else but not knowingly and not forcefully. I opened it up again to check if anything was obviously loose but nothing seemed to be.. (btw tks for help so far!)

hmm by the sounds of it you may have a bad component.... like something has blown or just stopped working. dont take my word for it though because there will be other more experienced guys reply and may contradict me but its possible your motherboard or something, maybe your psu is gone. Dont worry though as components are easily replaceable. Like there is no need to wright off the computer you can just buy a new component... best bet might be to take it to a shop, or wait a while here and wait and see if anyone else has had any similar problems and experience with this particular problem.

Sorry i couldnt be of more help,
    Aidan

    me again...

I had an IT guy in work take a look and he thought initially it was the graphics card but after more investigation is pretty sure the motherboard has blown. He recommended sending it back to Dell. Thing is its out of warranty and I'm wondering is it worth sending it back (cost??).

Plus if we got a new Pc would it be easy to get the data from the hard drives to the new one.
    Cheers
