Ship's wages row erupts once more
    From:The Irish Independent
    Wednesday, 20th December, 2006

EIGHT crew from the detained ship at Dublin Port were escorted to the airport last night by gardai as the row over unpaid wages erupted again.

Their departure means that the ship now has too few crew left on board to legally leave Dublin port.

Earlier, the company agreed to pay wages owed to the crew - about €14,000 each - and shortly afterwards a High Court order preventing the Merchant Brilliant from leaving Dublin Port was lifted.

The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) says that the owners initially refused to stamp the crew's seafarers' books to allow them to go unless they returned the money.

ITF Inspector Ken Fleming rushed to the port last night, accompanied by gardai and customs officers, and ensured that crew members were issued with their discharge documents and also retained their overdue wages before leaving the ship, where only 12 crew now remain on board.

Eight of crew decided to leave the ship. The three Latvians and five Russians are to stay at Dublin Airport overnight before flying home tomorrow.

It is understood that 12 crew members have decided to remain on board but this is less than the maritime requirements to allow the ship to leave Dublin Port fully crewed. Earlier, ADG Ship Management paid out arrears of €153,000 in wages to the crew.
