How do I convince the Mrs?

At the moment we have Chorus digital plus Sky Sports, I'm thinking of getting Sky+ but Mrs Billy thinks Chorus is more than enough as its got everything on it that she likes to watch (RTE, UTV BBC and C4 basically!). We don't need the movies as we never watch them but with two kids I'd like the kids and discovery type packages and a couple of others plus Sky Sports for the football. Its a fair bit more expensive than Chorus is so I do I convince the Mrs that its worth the extra (if it is worth the extra).....

You don't convince her. Just do it.

Who earns the dosh in the house?

We both do but its always like that, anytime I upgrade the computer (approx every five years) I have to go through the "whats wrong with the old one?" argument, on one occasion I had to sabotage the existing one until she suggested I replaced it. Shes a bit old fashioned in some ways she thinks €70 per month could be better spent on stuff like food, furniture, kids shoes, electricity bills, pensions, saving for a rainy day.....(Oh my God, I'm beginnning to sound like her now).
    Maybe its just me.........

You won't need to spend €70 a month for the channels you want. It would work out at €54 per month for Sky Sports and 4 Mixes.

I was going for multi-room though (as we do with Chorus), otherwise with the kids I'd never get to see anything.
Between the Mrs and the kids you can see how much clout I have in my house!
Sigh, what kind of a man am I?:(

You said you were thinking of getting Sky+. If you have sports and are getting multiroom, Sky willgive you a Sky+ box for €75 and as you have sports they will waive the Sky+ monthly fee.

Once your Mrs. sees Sky+ in action she won't want to go back. Just say that you'll sign up for the year and if it doesn't work out you can get rid, but, after she sees Sky+ she won't want to. Worked for my folks and they were very against the idea of getting Sky.

you could have a FTA setup for the kids, they wont have ALL the channels but they will have the likes of all the BBCs inc. Cbeebies, all the ITV and two animated channels Pop and Pop plus, this would only require a second box which you can pick up for around €40 second hand and another lead coming from your dish (LNB), with a TV ariel they can have the RTEs etc
another option would be to get a splitter and magic eye so that if you and the missus were not around they could "take over" the sub box from their location and enjoy all the channels
dont forget with Sky+ you can always record a program they want to see and simply look at it when you're not around
go for it, you won't look back, sky+ is magic

Three words: time shift tv. I agree with slave, it IS sorta magic.

my missus would never live without Sky+ now.....

Just tell her that instead of TV schedules rulling your lives it will be the other way around. inform her that you don't have to wait until a programme has finished recording before you can start watching it as with tapes

SKY+ simply allows you watch whatever you want when you want to.

Couple of examples that might help convince her

... you are trying to ge the kids to bed... 9PM is approaching and you want to catch the news/weather... no hassle... SKY+ will allow you record it or pause RTE1 until you are ready to come down, or leave RTE 1 playing and rewind back to the beginning.

... does she have favourite soaps? With a few clicks the whole series/weeks worth will record. Skip the adds when playing back... watch several episodes in one sitting.

... live games don't have to be live... record and /or pause them.

... Stop watching to take that phonecall, answer the door or make a cuppa.

... not a video tape in sight

SKY+ absolutely frees up your time and still allows you watch what you want.. on your terms.

Could not ever ever go back to anything less than SKY+

and BTW I only pay €36 per month for SKY+ (2 mixes... General + Kids)

I then pumped the signal back into the existing NTL cabling that is in the house and the signal is broadcast to every Tv... and with the red eys you watch / change the signal anywhere (not exactly multiroom) but here's a nice bit.. you and missus are watching something live or recorded off the SKY+ box... but are tired and would like to hit the sack and watch the rest... well.. just press pause... lock up... into bed... unpause.

    As someone said above.. Magic.

Variety + Knowledge better. Plenty of ordinary kid junk to watch on free channels and they'll enjoy the Knowledge pack channels.

It is at the moment, though that offer was to end very soon. Mind you, they may extend the offer for another month or so.
